Insomnia

I've been very stressed out and life hasn't been going so well recently, which has caused some insomnia. I sleep only 2 hours a day and I wake up at 5am but I've had more energy than I've had in a long time. Why is this

You likely have high cortisol levels, which are keeping you up and waking you up early.  Try to destress.

    Hi James,

Definitely sounds like stress. Which is a common cause of Insomnia. Have you thought about seeing a psychologist, to help talk out and deal with what's been going on, then maybe you can sleep better? other things i find helpful include

    - mindfulness meditation before bed (youtube tutorials for hypnosis meditation sleep) to relax

    - journaling all of your thoughts, stress and things in life whilst drinking some chamomile tea before going to bed

    - No phones, lights or tv half an hour before bed

    - take valarian natural herbal pills

    - make a list of all of the reasons WHY you will sleep tonight. Convince your brain, cause right now it's like it believes that it won't sleep thus it won't.

    - tell yourself even if you don't sleep, IT WILL BE OKAY. i find that listing all of the things i am grateful for helps (eg; even if i don't sleep tonight, i still have a family that loves me very much).

    - see a doctor for a heavy benzo pill just so you can get one decent night's sleep. i find that that's enough to put my bodyclock back in order

    - but above all, be kind to yourself.

I say this as someone who went through a bad bout of insomnia. no sleep for three days (with like 2 hours of sleep during that period). it was a nightmare. these things helped me. i find that it's all psychological at the end of the day

Insomnia can be caused by psychiatric and medical conditions, unhealthy sleep habits, specific substances, and/or certain biological factors. Recently, researchers have begun to think about insomnia as a problem of your brain being unable to stop being awake (your brain has a sleep cycle and a wake cycle—when one is turned on the other is turned off—insomnia can be a problem with either part of this cycle: too much wake drive or too little sleep drive).
