Intermittent Fasting and IBS

I have had IBS for some years now and last autumn I had a bad flare which lasted months. I am also menopausal and have been on HRT for the past six months and my symptoms improved. However, I have gained weight this year and have started the 16:8 fasting diet in the last two weeks and my IBS symptoms are rumbling again. I was on the same diet last summer (which works for me with weight loss) and then had a big IBS flare but I have only clocked that this must be affecting my gut for some reason. Has anybody else had similar? I would have thought given your gut a rest would be beneficial but I actually think its aggravating my symptoms...

possibly because eating little and often is better for ibs than cramming all food into eight hours. a usual days meals wouldnt be in 8 hours. mine for example runs from 7-7 usually

Any diet change can affect your gut, particularly when you have IBS. I would stop the diet and go back to your original eating plan. Giving your gut a rest doesn't work for everyone.

hi sabab, i read your post and thought this doesn't sound right. i know people diet but you have a health condition on top. you must seek advice before you start any alteration to your food i should think. my bowel REALLY suffered when i cut all gluten out due to being coeliac and NOT having ibs, like i was 1st told. please, please seek medical including dietitian advice, you may have some element missing which will calm your ibs down. good luck.

I have had loads of tests last autumn from celiac to cancer on my bowels and have been officially told by my doctor it is IBS. I think actually pippa58442 you could be right that a change in eating pattern has affected my sensitive gut. Ive always been ok eating different things etc etc but because I have been feeling better and like me again, I have "forgot" about my innards and that they might protest. I have been eating in a longer window today my symptoms haven't been too bad. So lesson learnt... don't change your diet! Thank you everyone 😃
