hello. i have had a cold for the past week, and last night i started feeling relief from the head/ear pressure. at the same time I developed a squeaky, whistling noise in my left ear, it's just like a bird chirping. I've never experienced this with a cold before and it is worrying and annoying. is this normal?

You need to see an ENT specialist. Preferably an otologist/neurotologist ENT specialist. So many things can cause those phantom noises in your ears. Hearing loss, eustachian tube dysfunction, fluid in ears etc etc.
