Interpretation of eye test results

Posted , 4 users are following.

i had some tests done at the eye clinic in our local hospital the consultant i saw wasn't very nice or did she want to explain things.

After the tests she wrote letter on her computer printed it off (my copy) as she would be sending a letter to my GP. she then said i will see you again in 2 months i did ask her what was wrong hut she didn't answer.

well i cannot make any sense of the wording of the letter i wonder if anyone on here can give me an idea. i have checked on line but still don't understand.

  1. 6/18 pinhole in both eyes
  2. macula hyperpigmentaion with a few drusens both eyes
  3. visual field defects with depressed fovea both eyes.

i hope someone can help me with to what it all means. before my next appointment

    thank you

    Hi Jane

Try not to worry. I had a similar experience when first diagnosed with my PVD. Quite a sharp, uncaring exchange of words/information in the consultation. Then a few weeks after came a letter with lots of big, technical medical terms that had not even been mentioned in the consultation! All turned out a lot less serious than I imagined first. Have to say next follow up appt with same consultant - he was much nicer. Sometimes its just a job to them. They don't realise the impact their behaviour/ reactions are having when we are already very anxious. Hope all goes ok for you

They should have discussed these results with you. Make sure they do at your next appt if you continue care with them. Visual field defects are typically caused by glaucoma or macular degeneration. This does not sound like Glaucoma, as your IOP would be high. Drusen is common with macular degeneration but people can have drusen with age that never result in anything else. My personal recommendation would be to start an eye vitamin like preservision and to start doing an amsler grid at home every day to check your vision. Both of these are very easy to do. The pinhole test that I believe you are talking about is used to see what the best your vision can be with correction. So whatever you were able to see through the pinhole is the best they would be able to get your vision with glasses or contacts. Hope this helps.
