Intrusive thoughts on citalopram

Hi is it normal to have intrusive thoughts on citalopram in the first week?

    I think it's perfectly normal, yes. Side effects in the early days can almost make you feel like you've taken a step backwards but stick with it. I think things tend to settle down after a good 4-6 weeks but everybody is different.

    Hi,At the beginning of taking an antidepressant, everything can be worsened. Heightened anxiety along with worse symptoms,side effects that affect your sleep, appetite etc. This is caused by the increase in serotonin and other effects in your brain and body brought about by taking the medication. Depression can also be worsened and thoughts of suicide can increase, especially in younger people. If you feel your thoughts are too bad you should talk to your Dr. straight away, and you should have support around you to help in the beginning for those reasons. The heightened anxiety can cause intrusive thoughts,but you shouldn't let them get too bad before talking to someone. Take care.
