Iol Movement.

Had cataract surgery Mar 20 on right eye. It seems I can see it shifting into place when I look left, right or up and down., almost like a contact lens. Could this be the cause of incorrect measurements as I was not told how long to stop wearing contacts before the measurements until I called 2 days before to ask. I also have macular degeneration and glaucoma. Very scared to have the second one done Apr. 17.

Hi Peggy - I don't believe you can see IOL shifting (or shouldn't be able to). Perhaps it is the glimmer of light shimmering off it? It it was actually shifting you wouldn't be able to see well. Things would be in and out of focus.

As Su.An mentioned, maybe it's a glimmering or other dysphotopsia that could possibly go away over time. Or maybe it's caused by misalignment or displacement of the IOL, or there is something else going on. You should discuss it with your eye surgeon or a retinal specialist. They can examine your eye to determine if there is any problem with the IOL placement.

Hi Peggy
I also had cataract surgery and have macular degeneration...My left eye was done on February 12, first surgery of the day was almost fine in one week. I am no longer as far sighted and need glasses to read a book. The doctor used lenses for astigmatism and said I would need no glasses...The other eye, the right eye not so. My surgery was January 8, middle of the morning (did that matter?) Anyway until this month I have been seeing graffiti instead of words when I read. The surgeon says its because of the macular disease and the retina doctor says my retina is fine but the photo receptors may be fading although he cannot test this. I remembered that dry eye can do this so I have been using wetting drops and I think something may be happening. Now I do not see that dark thing like a lens I was seeing and my far vision is better, fluorescent light bothers me a little and my vision on that eye is somewhat blurry but improved. Why this eye is taking so long to heal, no idea. I am going to wait another month until I am sure before I try anything, I also wonder if the lens is correct or if the shape of my eye has to adapt to a new astigmatism lens....

So many obstacles to encounter. Hopefully your right eye improves. I am going back tomorrow to have then re-do my measurements and hopefully that is the problem. I could see better in my right eye before the surgery with only +3.25 reading glasses. (My perscription was like +4.50 and +5.50) so that is also really strange. Also, I seem to have lost some color in the operated eye. It's all so scary not knowing what the next surgery might bring. All we can do is try to stay positive.

peggy, i wasn't told to leave my contacts out before measurements at all and I ended up undercorrected. I too could seebetter before the surgery. I am not doing my other ( left) eye until I ABSOLUTELY must. I see my optho again friday and have a list of questions. if only i knew then what I know now.

I agree with Hudson girl please remove the contacts ahead, my surgeon said that contacts change the shape of your eye and that is why removing them helps. Good luck, I am seeing my surgeon the end of this month but I can tell you my retina doctor just checked my eyes and I am doing better at reading the chart, I was happily surprised... Keep me posted and again good luck, also I have heard that color returns.

You may be right, I wore no contacts for a month before my right eye operation and that eye is still healing ( 3 months) and I wore no contacts for two months before my right eye operation and it healed in 2 weeks. I do not know but remember the eye has to adapt to the shape of the new artificial lens and the capsule (what holds the lens). My doctor said that the contacts change the shape of eyes so maybe they should recommend longer time. I am glad you are positive and other people in this wonderful site suggested I wait before doing something else and it was a good suggestion. Let me tell you I have waited and yesterday I went to my retina doctor and my sight has improved, now I can read almost as well as with my other eye. I will have my eyes measured by the end of the month. and get glasses for small print ,,,Good luck,

Elizabeth and Peggy - regarding contact lenses. As far as I know from my initial consult with my surgeon contact lenses needed to be removed prior to eye measurements to ensure accurate power calculation (as you are correct they do change shape of your eye). I wasn't wearing contacts around that time (was wearing glasses exclusively) so I am not 100% sure about how much time required (if any) prior to surgery.
I checked instructions provided me before eye mapping/measurements and here is what I was instructed:
"Soft contact lens wearers should leave lenses out of the eyes for at least one week. Rigid (including gas permeable and standard hard lenses) contact lens wearers should leave lenses out of the eyes for at least three weeks."
Hope this helps.
