Question: Is There A Relationship Between IBS and Menopause?

Answer:

For most women, menopause will have an effect on IBS symptoms.

As part of the process of menopause, there is a decrease in the levels of the sex hormones, estrogen and progesterone.

There is a well-established relationship between these sex hormones and digestive symptoms, most likely due to the fact that receptor cells for these hormones are located throughout the digestive tract.

Thus, the changing hormonal levels of menopause do have an effect on IBS, but what that effect is is not completely clear.

The evidence to date currently provides only conflicting and incomplete evidence about the change in IBS symptoms during and after menopause.

For the most part, population surveys indicate that women experience a decrease in IBS symptoms following menopause.

The number of women with IBS appears to decrease after the age of 45 and by the age of 65 IBS is experienced at equal rates in men and women.

However, many women report an increase in IBS symptoms following menopause.

This may be especially likely around the time of early menopause (perimenopause).

It has been theorized that this increase in symptoms at the time of early menopause is due to the lessening of the levels of sex hormones that occurs at this time, in much the same way that women experience an increase in IBS symptoms in the days surrounding the onset of menstruation.

My IBS is playing up at the moment, period due today/tomorrow but is slow in starting this month.  I'm particularly anxious atm aswell.  Also know I've not been taking my B sups as regularly as I was so going back on them today.

Anybody else suffering in a similar way?

      Hi middlemuddle

the only time i got ibs was by taking the wrong magnesium ..

magnesium citrate and oxide has laxative effects, when i changed to solgar chelated magnesium, ( bisglycinate)  i was fine again.

anxiety and stress can cause tummy upset too.

and when a period is due can cause upset bowel.

B6 must be taken daily all the time to feel the benefits, no skipping ..

      Take care

Hi jay you use a magnesium spray can you remind me what it is and where I can buy it. I took some magnesium last night and felt very irritated in the bladder for two hours I took it in water. But today felt great almost a normal day so wondered if spray might be better.

      Hi Liz

i take the Solar Chelated (bisglycinate) magnesium, that does not give you the runs..  magnesium oxide and citrate will as its like a laxative effect.

the magnesium oil spray i get off ebay as i live in southern spain, i think others in UK buy it from holland and barret

Thanks jay will get one today used magnesium at night and had two hours of pressure to wee and a horrible scratchy feeling in the bladder. Having said that the next day I actually had a NORMAL day one of so few. I want to get off the rollercoaster now I'm dizzy with symptoms that pop up like perishing gnomes you flatten or contain one and up pops another grinning idiot. Off for blood tests finally!! The doctors I've seen just don't care it's all menopause and lump it very disappointed with treatment so far it all seems to be self help. I'm also at vulval clinic in new year yet more fabulous symptoms I wish I could buy a dress with all the money the health food shops have had ,it would be fantabulistic and horrifically expensive instead it's in my innards and of course out again ( get my drift) ...

You can make your own spray buy buying the flakes and disolving in warm water. Works out cheaper and you can choose the strength.
