irritable bowel syndrone

I have been having stomach cramps and constipation for a long time. I am taking Luxido but I am never off the toilet. My stoolsl end up like a blachk muss. I do take iron tablets and I am on a lot of medication. I have been taking iron tablets for years. My last blood test showed I was anaemic despite taking iron tablets. GP says take more Luxido but feel so ill that I have to go to bed. I think I have irritable bowel syndrome but I have an appointment with a new GP. Could some one help me with diet and help to cope with severe stomach pain. What should I say to GP please

Ease off the laxatives if you are running to the loo. Try a food diary to see if any foods are causing symptoms.  Simply tell your doctor about your stomach pain and constipation.  Say exactly how long you have had your symptoms, whereabouts on your stomach your pain is located and ask whether any of your medications could be the cause.

thank you I saw the doctor who was very nice and it is IBS. I have to have another blood test and if that is not right, my doctor will request an endoscopy again as I have Barrett's oesophagitis and gastric acid reflux. My doctor has changed my tablets to Mebeverine but unfortunately I had a very bad bout of diarrhoea today. I haven't taken a laxative and wonder if it is the tablets or a can of fizzy lemonade which someone gave me. If you have time I would like your advice

Mebeverine unfortunately is a stomach irritant and can cause a lot of problems including severe indigestion. I was put on them too and came off them within four days because they made me feel so ill. Most of the side effects are not listed on the patient leaflet.  I had to google them.  I find Buscopan much milder and far better pain relief.  You may have to try more than one medication to find the one that suits you.  Maybe ask your doctor to change your antispasmodic. Buscopan can also be bought over the counter.

Fizzy drinks can be IBS triggers too especially if they have any artificial sugars in them and they can also cause gas.  It is great you got a diagnosis.

Hi, there are many different kinds of anaemia, the iron store in the body can be good but you can still be anaemic, I've been through all this sort of stuff because I have RA, too much iron can be really bad for you, what I'm saying is you can have plenty of iron but still be anaemic, this is what my GP told me, iron can give you a bad stomach, it's a tricky thing iron, is your iron store measured?

Thank you. I didn't realise that the iron store in the can be good but still suffer from anaemia. I have seen my doctor and have a confirmed diagnosis of IBS. I have to have another blood test for iron and if it is not right then I will be referred back for an endoscopy as I have gastric acid reflex. My doctor changed my tablets from Buscopan to Mebeverine but today I have had a really bad bout of diarrhoea with stomach cramps and I don't know if this is due to Mebeverine or a fizzy lemonade drink that someone gave me. If you have time perhaps you could give me some advice. Thank you

Tell the doctor all you wrote here.  I don't know when your appointment is, but if you start feeling very weak, can barely walk, you should go to the hospital.  Pain, black stools, and weakness could mean you are bleeding from the stomach.  Iron is not the only thing that creates black stools--blood does.

Hi jeanette, every time I look on here your post seems to be haunting me.  Not many people on here comment who have ibsc not d!  You need real help off a dietitian and your doctor working with you to help you as you seem to be having really severe constipation and this can't be fixed alone.  Talk to your doctor and if you can take someone with you, you may need tests and to talk to a FODMAP specialist as I think there is something deplete in your diet but what I can't tell as I am no expert.  Please ask for help!
