Irritable legs at night in bed

Hi loving this site finding it really helpful. I've posted a few days ago about not been able to sleep at night. I find it difficult to sleep on my back and cannot keep my legs flat so I tend to sleep with either my operatedcleg s knee raised or both knees raised.

Not sure why this is happening but I read until really tired and then try to sleep. As soon as I lay in my sleeping position my legs start moving about almost uncontrollably. They can't find a comfy position I have to readjust pillows etc and it can be hours by the time they stop.

Being sleep deprived is exhausting I'm now on day 10. I've tried sleeping tablets but I still go through the same procedure with my legs .

Has anyone else come across this or have any advise. I see my physio this Thursday

Thanks a very tired Sue

Hi sue I also suffered from restless legs and was told to drink tonic water

I don't know if it worked but I took a glass before bed I was then told to lay

a hot water bottle on the top of my legs and between both things it did work

and I sometimes get it now depending how tired I am with walking too far

I think everything is worth a try as dlferrrent things work for different people

The hot water bottle really works for me if I have that during the day I just sit

with it on my knee and it does ease it

    Good luck and take care

Well done Helen - Tonic water is supposed to be good for cramps, so that makes sense.

Thank you all for your advice.

Last night I went to bed with a different attitude. I took my phone , tablet and a book with me. I told myself I've come for a rest and to take the weight of my feet ( had a swollen foot last 2 days ). So around 11.30pm I started to feel tired and told myself now it's time to rest your eyes. Hey ho I woke up around 3 am I couldn't believe it no irritable legs no backache. It really is about your mind set and I can't thank you all enough.

I no longer dread the nights. ☺☺☺☺

      Fabulous Sue,

Some proper sleep at last. I hope you feel a little better for it.

I think most of us are getting chunks of sleep rather than long runs.

For myself, apart from trips to the loo, I wake when I would normally turn over in my sleep to adjust my position.  Won't it be wonderful when normal sleep comes back - I have no idea when that will be.

This morning I realised I didn't take painkillers in the night.  A first for me since the op.

      Small but important milestones,

I feel a lot better and more relaxed.

I always woke when I wanted to change position and used to get annoyed with myself always clock watching.

I've no where to go or anything much to do so it doesn't matter anymore.

This forum is so helpful as I feel like I have a loads of questions to ask. I'm at physio on Thursday so will ask a few questions then as well.

      Getting there.☺

      Yo Cels !!!!

that is a Biggie, girl - you are doing so great all by your self ...

Don't overdo it though - so  easy to do - my bad thing was/is lifting things that were, on hind sight, too heavy - Now I have that with carrying grocery bag(s) -

      Hi Renee.

      How are you?

I try to be sensible but your body betrays you as you start to get better and fools you into thinking you can do more then you can.  Just a little walk outside this morning whacked me out.  Am resting in the chair now.

Yes, I couldn't believe waking up this morning and seeing my painkiller sitting on the bedside table.  I've cut down to one instead of two now.

      Whoop whoop!

      Renee,

I think a shopping trolley is in order - I know exactly what you mean, those bags are so heavy now, much heavier than they were before. eek

I've taken a hot water bottle to bed every night since I came home.  Very comforting.  I usually sleep on my side cuddling a pllow so now I'm sleeping on my back cuddling my hot water bottle (plus the odd naughty side sleeps) eek
