Is 2nd knee replacement easier?

Posted , 11 users are following.

13 months ago had left knee replaced with good outcome, but lengthy recovery. Wanted to hold off on 2nd knee but having too much pain. I'll probably have it done in June. Is there any reason to think the second knee might be an easier recovery?

No.  It's a crapshoot.  Many people on the Forum report an opposite recovery from their first one, for the better or worse.  Some find them the same.  There is no way to tell or predict pre-op FOR YOU.  People will tell you their stories but they have nothing to do with what you will encounter...it is an unknown with no discriminating predictor.

Thanks for your response. Yeah I'm sure it is a crap shoot and the only thing that would make it easier is being more aware of what to expect and what you may need for assistance.

You know how to prepare your home and all the "ice-elevate-take your meds on schedule-hydrate-etc," yadda-yadda, so you're ahead of the game.  You also know that the first month could be very painful and that a full recovery takes a year.  In other words, unlike us, you have no surprises ahead of you where we knew ABSOLUTELY NOTHING and got hit by the brick wall at 90 MPH!!!

Prepare for the worst; hope for the best.  You're already a pro at this...

    Hi Neizie!

    MINE was!!!😁

I was fully expecting a repeat of #1 or maybe rougher because THIS second knee had ALWAYS been a bugger and much more painful than my #1 knee.

I was VERY pleasantly surprised when even in the recovery room I could MOVE my newly-operated-on knee ALL AROUND! Doc came in and was THRILLED that all had gone so well. I was discharged from the hospital in two days. My first knee was four days.

My newest knee didn't swell much, was MUCH better at bending, felt stronger, and had caught up to my previously-done knee by the end of the month!

Nearly three years later my second knee is STILL my best overall.

I was VERY grateful that my second surgery went so well.

Wishing you great success! ??Getting my knees replaced were the best things I have done for my overall health and well-being.

Wow! Your experience sounds great. Thanks for your response. I know that my experience isn't necessarily going to be like yours, but it is great to hear about and hope for!

On 3rd knee replacement. Right knee feb 2015 and jan 2018. Right hip june 2017. Right side out of wack. But lots of ice works well. Kingsize soft pillow under right leg. Works well for me. Sleeping all night now. Oh left knee nov 2015. Pool arobics works wonders. Loosing weight also helps

Same knee? Yes knee replacement is a hard recovery. Mindset for speedy recovery is a must. I have a great physical therapist that pushes me. My first knee failed because there was no bracket. Smith and Nephew. Be strong you can do it. I am 2 months out and off to join the gym today for water arobics. Eaiser on the joints. Whenever you feel down i am here to chat😁
