Is ANA test a waste of time?

I was reading up on ANA testing. I found a list of possible reasons you could get a positive. One being that you have Raynaud's Syndrome. I've known I have Raynaud's for years. So according to this article I'll test positive regardless, correct?

If you test positive for ANA, then your doctor could do further testing to find out what is causing the positive ANA. Each autoimmune disease, Lupus, RA, Hashimoto's, ect.. all have their own seperate antibodies that the body makes and each one can be tested based on your symptoms.

Thanks for your reply. I guess I was under the impression that there was only the one test and then it was a matter of eliminating what it wasn't more than being able to test for what it is.

Hi Annette, it doesn't seem the ANA test is very specific. It could mean any of several autoimmune diseases, but apparently some people have ANA and no disease at all! I hope this helps.
