Is anyone experiencing Restless Leg Syndrome post-op?

Posted , 7 users are following.

18 days after THR (anterior approach) I have no pain in the hip but the RLS feeling is driving me crazy.  Am still taking Oxycodone to relieve the sensation, 5mg every 6-8 hours. Cannot get comfortable in any position otherwise.  How long is this gonna last?

I have RLS some nights. I usually get up and walk a bit, then put heat on where my legs are restless. A warm cloth, a warm rice bag, or heating  pad on low. It's no fun! Good Luck!

Consider asking for gabapentin for the RLS. It's safer than any of the oxy opiates and addresses the syndrome effectively. How long will it last? I can't help with that. I'm 11 months post surgery and still have it due to foot drop and other nerve issues from the surgery. Good luck!

I and others here ha e found that taking one 100gm of Magnesium Citrate sorts it for me. Before my ankle revision surgery I took it very occasionally but after it had to be most nights before bed time. Always works for me. If it is leg cramp then Quinine tablets or Indian Tonic water which for me is a very rapid fix.

    Cheers Richard

I do take magnesium every night, but still have nights with RLS. I tried Gabapentin, and immediately threw up. That's just me. My two sisters take it for other reasons, and it agrees with them. Worth a try.

I had to get up and walk to get my legs to calm down.  Spent many nights pacing the floor.  Setting on the edge of the bed and lifting my foot until my leg was straight out helped some. About the time I was up and walking regularly it seemed to go away.  Took about 4 weeks for me, about the time I could set in a regular chair.
