I've been on Zopiclone and Clonazepam for nearly 4 yrs now plus other meds. my psychiatrist blames my doctor for keeping me on them so long. I missed one night of Zopiclone and was awake all night and next day by lunch time I felt so panicky and everything g was loud and by evening I felt my head was going to explode until I took the Zopiclone again i am so so scared of stopping them as I wont sleep for days and will feel awful

Hi Basten. at the moment i am having to take Zopiclone 7.5mg for insomnia along with Diazepam 2mg prn due to being in a bipolar manic episode. my psychiatrist, g.p and cpn only allow me to be prescribed Zopiclone for a maximum of seven days as it is a highly addictive drug that should only be used for short term use because if like benzodiazapine drugs over a long period of time your body can build up a resistance to them or your body becomes too dependant on them so if you miss a dose one night your body instantly reacts in a negative way. I have to take Quetiapine 300mg every night along with Depakote and Lamotrigine to help my body relax enough so my mind and brain can shut off for the night but if i miss even one nights medications i will be up all night. I would suggest speaking with your g.p as there is a drug available on prescription and often available over the counter called Promethazine, essentially it is an anti histamine, there are ones available that have natural properties that aid the body to relax and induce natural sleep. Please do speak with your g.p or if you are under a mental health support network speak with them as being on Zopiclone for such a long time will not be doing you any good. There may be better alternatives available for them to explore with you. If there are alternatives work with your g.p or support network as they will be able to gradually taper you off the Zopiclone but whatever you do please don't do it alone or just suddenly stop taking it as this can cause a relapse and be detrimental to your mental health.

hi basten, i don't know about drugs like you described no but i know what you mean about doctors and receiving/being given drugs when they think it's the best things to do. all they do is then put £ in to the pharmaseutical companies back pockets. doctors then think 'whoops' sorry i forgot i dumpef you and left you on them! i can't believe this is still happening, my doctor have tried we'll give you antidepressants and monitor you, rubbish. thanks for the warning. i was given a nerve painkiller but it has so many side effects i won't even try them!

hi i so can relate to you about zopiclone i have been on them for over 20 years and had a huge addiction to them 7 years ago where I was taking up to 5 throughout the day and 3 a night I had huge explosions in my head if I ran short and the worst anxiety ever I had to wean myself down and got to 3 a night then was put in a pyschriatic hospital to try and detox but the Drs said as I was only their for 2 weeks I left on a 11.5mg dose I'm now on 1 a night and dread to think if a new dr came along and stopped them. They are a powerful hypnotic. my advice would be if you are being made to come off them don't rush it I had seizures when used to run out.Try every other night maybe halving the dose then see how that goes if you can manage on a 3.75 carry on with this then half that dose but do it so gradually.I wish you the best of luck I know one day I will have to face this but after being on them so many years I can't imagine the side effects. All the best xx

I've been on zopiclone for over 20 years. I have never attempted to come off them after a 2 year long living hell coming off diazepam. I had to be put back on diazepam so 2 years of my life were destroyed for nothing.

I would cut down a tiny bit at a time, giving yourself time to get used to a slightly lower dose.

    Good luck.

    Carol
