Is anyone there?

I think that I messed up my original post as I can't see it on here.

After going to the doctors today and admitting honestly how much I drink all I got was 12 step program, Russell Brands book 'Recovery' and a prescription for Thiamine. I had already researched the 2 best types of medicines to stop drinking and tried to explain that this was an ongoing issue, not a result of loosing my baby boy after 12 hours in March. I feel like he didn't 'hear' me. This is a new doctor having moved in December.

My partner and I have finished a box of wine already and now he is in bed I went to the shop and bought another 2 bottle: I hate myself and know I will regret it in the morning but I just don't care!

Thank you so much sue for replying to me. I can't tell you how much it means.

Tbh after I posted this, considering my first one this afternoon didn't work I felt like I didn't mean the 'I don't care' part. If I didn't, I wouldn't be posting on here for a start!

Always here to listen. Unfortunately a lot of doctors don't have experience or are trained incorrectly in how to deal with our problem. Keep talking to us and we will try to help.

I told him at my 6 week check up that I was hanging and he agreed I probably needed it, but I didn't think then to admit my problem.

I hate how embarrassing it is to have a problem with alcohol. It is so socially acceptable and down to self interpretation.

Your doctor sounds pretty crappy. When I spoke to my doctor about having withdrawl fears he perscribed me Libri* at least 3 times for home detox before he made me go to a chemical dependency evaluation to continue my detox. After a couple more visits to er for more meds for detox I was able to find a doctor, with help from people on this forum, who would prescribe me naltrexone so that I now follow TSM.

After reading advice from this forum I have completed the pharmacy4U questionnaire in the hope that I will get a prescription. I asked my Dr today about medication but was (in my interpretation) told that wasn't going to happen. I told him that I was shaking and drinking between 1 - 3 bottles of wine a day.

I'm afraid that because I am taking SSRI'S l won't get a prescription from Pharmacy4U. I'm worried without it I will kill myself through drink!

Just so you know, the guidelines for this medication is that it is approved for moderate alcohol dependency and that is classed as around 5 units a day for a woman, not at risk of alcohol withdrawal symptoms, and unable to reduce their drinking on their own.

Online consultations have their limitations and the doctor at Pharmacy2U is unlikely to prescribe if you are drinking 1-3 bottles of wine a day as you MIGHT be at risk of alcohol withdrawal symptoms.  The doctor at Pharmacy2U is likely to refer you back for a face to face consultation.

To have a face to face consultation, that is usually done by the organisation in your area that deal with alcohol recovery.  Your GP should have referred you onto them.  If not, I suggest you call your GP surgery tomorrow and ask them who that organisation is so that you can self-refer yourself to them.  They will then do an assessment of your current situation and you can request to see a doctor who specialises in treating alcohol misuse then.

My doctor wanted to refer me to RISE but I refused: I teach people from there, how can I go there!!!

My doctor didn't even push me, just accepted my answer without any probing as to why

If RISE is your local alcohol recovery service and where the specialist doctors are based, then unfortunately, that leaves you in a difficult position in terms of NHS treatment.  Your GP is not experienced enough in treating alcohol misuse to comfortably prescribe to you, and the guidelines he/she is following state that patients should be referred to the local alcohol recovery service.

RISE wasn't the name of the organisation I found online for your area, that was an organisation called Together - though that may be the same thing, or a change of name, or the information I found available may be out of date.

I just google RISE and their website says:

RISE Recovery and Integration Service was a partnership between EDP and Addaction from April 2014 until March 2017. RISE is now delivered by Addaction.

I know exactly what you mean. I have been trying to get help last ten years but only seems once your almost at the end you can get help. I used to be shucked when they asked me do you drink in the morning, now it’s normal. There aint no help for us. Dr said to me only help available to me is to take anti depressants and don’t drink. How I end up like this then huh. Great

Hi @emma84640, I'm so sorry that you are in the same boat as me, do you mind telling me if you have had any drink tonight - if so how much and what of?

I told my Dr that my birth mum died from alcohol and that my Dad was a violent alcoholic, he just essentially (my interpretation) that I had been submitted to dealing with my problems through alcohol!

Also - forgot to say that I have been on SSRI's for years and although they help me to function enough to have a career they haven't ever stopped me from drinking.
