Is Bunion Surgery the right decision for me?

I am trying to decide if I should have bunion surgery. Recently, I have noticed inflammation around my bunion more when I work out. My dr. told me it is my decision and he thinks that the surgery will help. It doesn't hurt every day, mainly when I am more active. I am wondering maybe if I should try a different shoe or some kind of padding. I am 27 years old and I have heard a lot of negative feedback with this surgery so I am not sure if I should wait until I am in a lot more pain than I am since it isn't bothering me everyday. Can someone please advise what would be the best decision for me to make? It could get worst in the future but as of now not sure if I should just wait until it gets worse. Thank you for your feedback.

    Hi Melanie ,

If your bunion is causing sufficient pain to impinge your day to day activities to the point that you think you can no longer cope with the pain then I think the surgery would be justified but you alone can make that choice aesthetically your foot looks good

I have had fairly ugly bunions  not huge but ugly and the toe that was bent In woods  turning second toe into hammer shape but very little discomfort but awful feeling in the shoe

I desired to deal with it found the surgeon in the uk via internet who performs minimally invasive bunion surgery and has left foot done 18 m ago and not real pain to speak of had the other foot done 6 weeks ago less of a procedure but more pain although almost pain free so you just can't tell how it will pan out that said my surgeon DID explain everything and I did look up staff in more detail. I am 59 and I am glad I have now nice looking feet that I can show off in nose sandals instead of hiding my feet.  Good luck whatever you decide

Melanie....you mention Vibram shoes. I have also read about the minimalist shoe approach with great interest since my surgery as I no longer want to force my toes into toe boxes which do not allow them to splay properly.....which is basically all regular footwear.  I have been wearing toe sox now for a number of months with

Altra trainers which have a natural baby foot shaped toebox.  I more recently have started to wear the Correct Toes which fit into the Altra trainers (and into Crocs) and I am loving them.  I am hoping the small bunion on my right foot will not get any worse. They also seem to help my over pronation to a degree.  Pic attached.  I could not personallly wear the Vibram Five Finger because I do need some cushioning in the sole of the shoe for my back.  I would love to hear how you like the Vibrams.  As far as your question about will being pregnant affect your feet....this is definitely a question for your doctor who knows exactly the condition of your feet.  In the meantime, if you work on strengthening the muscles and tendons in your feet you just may be able to stop any further deterioration if not actually improve the condition of your feet.  Good luck !

      Rena,

I have been testing the Vibrams out and they are definetly something you want to work into slowly. The research I have done on them is that you have to work your muscles up to wear them all of the time. They do not have the support that you would like so maybe good for you to wear them around the house. They kinda straighten my bunion out which may help them from getting worse, Dr. said that they won't hurt but not to run in them outside because if I step on something it may injure me. I have to kinda stretch my toes in them every now and then when wearing bc my toes are short and they don't like being stretched out. I will have to look into getting some Correct Toes. Where did you find those? I would like to get some new workout shoes too, maybe I will check into Atlra trainers as well. Are they good to workout in? Thank you for sharing your feedback with me, greatly appreciated smile
