Is cancer inevitable? Anyone else think like this?

Hi everyone, Haven't posted in a while but I've been doing much better latley (sorry if that sounds boastful!) I still wory like mad, but I haven't reached for the scissors for relief in a week which I'm calling a win for now.

But as usual I find myself obbsessing about cancer, I see all these adverts and stories of healthy young people getting this disease despite looking after themselves. It seems everyone is affected in some way, and you hear phrases like ''oh cancer dosen't discriminate'' and ''the number of thsoe diagnosed is rising'' etc. And every little twinge of pain I get in my Breasts and/or armpits, or minor acidy, burning feeling I get in my stomach my mind immediately goes to cancer.

I don't know guys, I need to get over myself and enjoy my health. But does anyone else feel the same way? Or at least close?

Hello Bethany I have had health anxiety for far longer than you'd want to know but specifically cancerophobia? I'm same as you. Every ache, pain, blemish or symptom HAS to be cancer. I have a heart problem and I never give it a second thought. Just keep taking the meds but cancer is always to the fore. I'm hating the adverts on telly  at the moment about being cancer aware!!! The only thing I try to do is tell myself what will be will be and that panicking and worrying helps nothing! I'm really sorry I can't help but I sincerely hope that you get better. Best of luck. E.

    Hi Bethany,

Yes - cancer is a regular worry of mine - but then I think most people worry about it to some degree or other. As someone who suffers with anxiety and OCD I sometimes find it difficult to distinguish between what is a general worry that most people have and what is an OCD / anxiety worry that I have blown out of all proportion.

Try to remember that although they are saying that cancer diagnosis' are rising, this is probably at least partly due to the fact that through the adverts and things that people are reading, people are becoming more aware of what to look for, and are more prepared to get things checked out earlier.

Remember that we also hear how more people than ever are recovering from cancer now, due to identifying these illnesses earlier and through the treatment that they can now get.

All this being said, cancer still terrifies me (and thinking about it while writing this post reminds me how much!) I just try to put it out of my mind. If you are doing the checks that you can do, and referring any worrying symptoms to a Doctor to check, then there isn't much more any of us can do.

One thing that certainly worries me, is that I don't want to spend the majority of my life worrying about what illnesses I may catch in the future. Best to enjoy what time we have got, than to spend it worrying about what we may (or of course may not!) get.

    Take care.

Hello Bethany, I do not think for one minute that cancer is the inevitable end product for every one of us, and the official statistics endorse this view.

It is generally believed that most types of cancer are an over-reaction of our auto-immune sitation to certain situations.

So what can we do do avoid this dreadful disease?

Well they tell us that living a healthy life eating healthy food coupled with rest and excercise will do a great deal to strengthen our bodies, and this should help us. But I feel there is a lot more to it than that.

For example, I believe that anxiety and being over-burdened with worry can be a definite negative point that can break-down our auto-immune systems, exposing us to all sorts of diseases.

So in short what can we do, well we can try our best to enjoy our lives and take the necessary precautions that our experts advise us to take, and after that well I suspect it is very much the luck of the drawer.

If we are unlucky enough to succumb to cancer, we should then be very grateful that the success rate for successfully treating this dreadful disease is increasing day by day, and today more people recover from it than die.

I like that the replies to this post are informative and positive. As sufferers of health anxiety, we all have a choice... We can literally make ourselves ill with worry or we can arm ourselves with the facts and knowledge of what we xan do to minimise our chances of getting diseases but the rest of it is out of our control. I too hate all the adverts on tv and some days it triggers my fear, other days i can brush it off quite easily
