NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen can also help control the pain and swelling. Costochondritis can improve on its own after few weeks, although it sometimes last for several months or more. The condition is not life-threatening and does not lead to any permanent problems.

I have had this on and off for years. I only feel it at night, after lying down for a long time.
It has never been bad enough to bother me too much, but I never knew what it was.
Years ago I went to check it out, with x-rays and so on. It was described as being an inflammation of the muscle between the ribs, "probably the result of some minor accident."
I hadn't had any "minor accident"... but since nothing of any significance showed up, I just lived with it. Luckily for me, as soon as I get up, the pain goes away.
Funnily, I noticed it had come back just a few days ago after being absent for at least a year.
