is it normal for an urgent referral to stomach specialist to wait weeks

The hospital sent my doctors a letter suggesting i was referred to a stomach specialist had a MRI and colonoscopy. The doctor said he would do an urgent referral and then it would be down to do the above but just received a phone call from the receptionist saying my appointment will be on the 26th March.

Is that how long you normally have to wait for an urgent referral to a specialist? What is the normal wait?

Unfortunately yes- even the urgent referrals seem to take a long time. If you can go to the hospital at very short notice, it might be worth contacting the hospital and asking if they can call you if they get a cancellation before your appointment. I did this when I was told that the urgent waiting list for an appointment was 6 months, and managed to see the specialist about a week later. Hope that helps.

Gastroenterology is very busy so that's pretty fast. I dunno about the normal wait, I think it's 18 weeks or something smile

Urgent means a long wait, even when you see gastrologist he or she might not be of help. No advise was given to me and I eventually had a colonoscopy that failed 7 mths later. he just wasnt interested. I had lost over a stone. The gp said gastrologist was caring for me. What a laugh. So hope thing are better for you.
