Is it normal for BPH symptoms to advance rapidly?

I've had BPH's symptoms for over a year. However in the last five months it's rapidly gotten worse. I was under the impression that BPH symptoms are extremely gradual. I'm experimenting with alfuzosin. However I haven't been taking any medication since I've had BPH.

BPH symptoms can change with diet. Spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol and other things can make symptom worse

My answer would be yes. I think my BPH was building for a few years. It was so gradual that I didn't really notice it until in my late 50s and being on long automobile trips etc. Having to "hold it" because there wasn't a facility or for some other reason caused my retention to be worse. I knew at that time that I wasn't emptying even close, because as bad as my urges were, there wasn't much came out when I did make it to a restroom. But I could still pee. That was only a few weeks before I started having real problems. Yes, it did come on kind of suddenly but I was in my early 60s now and wasn't as aware of what I could be doing to my bladder and kidneys. I believe a few incidents such as having to hold it for 30 minutes; such as I did when, for a test, I had to drink a lot of H20 before going to the clinic and we got stuck in traffic can really progress the problem. Thats because its often a two part problem: the obstruction and the bladder decompensation. Sometimes I would be putting out the mail... only had a couple more sections to do... and rather than drop everything, lock up my vehicle etc. I'd just go ahead and finish, another 5 min. Often by that time, I didn't feel the urge anymore. It had totally disappeared which was puzzling. I think this contributed the most to my BPH getting worse (besides my prostate growing) was that the detrusser nerves in my bladder were stretched and not signaling my brain. I truly had no idea that I was retaining about 400 ml before I could get anything out.

keith, i started with BPH problem the same way you got it. i used to travel from virginia to delaware every day for my job. this long drive some times made me hold the pee pressure for an hour until i reached some rest area but when i reached there to take a leak it used to be scanty. another problem which is strange and worth mentioning here is that if i keep sitting i dont feel any urge of peeing but when i stand up and start moving i start feeling urge of peeing which means if i keep on sitting like long time even my bladder is full i dont feel urge to pee. plz let me know if any body has this same problem and has any suggestion. I am 50 and i have this problem for last 3 years. my prostate size is 35 grams. PMRV in my last ultra sound was 100ml. i am taking TAMSOLIN .04 mg

That is definitely true for me and I imagine it is true for most of us suffering from BPH. I think even for people without it, standing and walking around just sort of gets things moving.
I have this problem every morning. Thank goodness I don't suffer from the condition where the kidneys seem to be over active at night. I usually have to cic just as a routine thing in the morning because I don't feel like peeing first thing when I get up so after several minutes I just do it because I know I have to be retaining after sleeping for 6 hours or so.
I have urges throughout the day now after doing cic for 1 1/2 years although they are not always reliable. I always try to have a natural void first and, if I've had an urge, I can usually get out about 10 to 30 ml. Sometimes the urges still come and then go away
if I don't get to the restroom; or I stand there with urgency but nothing comes out. I attribute this to bladder rehab symptoms. I'm glad to be getting some urges even if they seem false sometimes.

Johnny,
You should get your PSA checked, and get the Digital Rectal Exam (DRE), to make sure it is not cancer.

I have a PSA about a year and a half ago and was normal. Plus I have an emergency Doctor and a urologist did a DR E about six months ago and they said it was okay. And in in the back of my mind I think that maybe they missed something during the DRE?
