Hello. I'm 22 years old guy. I had a L5 S1 disc heriation and I just had a microdecetomy surgery  done 1 week ago but I still have the pain I had before surgery but it a lot less. I was suffering with pain for one year before surgery. First I thought I wouldn't have any pain after surgery. So I'd like to know if this is normal? Or I'm too much worried. . Can someone please share their experice. Thank you

Remember you are only 1 week after surgery. Is the pain from the op site or the leg pain you were having before. Symptoms take a while to settle down as the nerve had been damaged with your herniated disc. Give it time. Things will settle. Just remember not to bend, lift or twist for around 4-6 weeks to give the surgery a chance to work. Only lie for first 3-4 weeks and then sit and lie over period of weeks. Don't do this and you will have a longer recovery.

Take it easy. I know what being a 22 yr old guy is like but time heals.

I fully agree with scott17436 , my second disc operation was Mid-June,2015 and I still have Sciatic pain in the problem leg.

However, this Tues.23rd Feb.2016 I am back to the hospital Triage system and will ask for the options for further non-invasive treatment. Diplomacy required to get past the filter Nurse, Triage system, but I'm determined to improve my mobility - I'm 79 years old - but young at heart!

    Keep asking questions!

I had mine done just over two years ago. Twelve months post op still had a lot of pain so took the next step - fusion. A micro is usually offer to the under 30s. I was 28 when I had micro. Twelve months on from fusion I'm still in pain but not as bad. With these ops there's no guarantee you will ever be pain free. You also need to give your nerves and scar tissues time to heal. I hope your op is successful. I've recently found out I have to bulges at c6/c7. I've got really bad pain in my neck, shoulders and arms. I'm also suffering with weakness and numbness of the hands and fingers. Apparently it's common for it to happen. Good luck.

    Sandusti123,

I was 25 when o had a fusion, L5-S1 and I had pain ever since, don't go by me I had a failed fusion because of the first doctor, but your body has to adjust to what you went through,.if it doesn't get better call the Dr's and ask them if it's normal,

I hope your pain goes away

    Good luck

    Hi sandusit:

You would think that anyone at your age would not have to go through these surgeries.  When I was around 30, at my car, opening the trunk, I got the most severe pain ever and had to go to my doctor and he gave me pain meds and muscle relaxants.  I was told to just lay in bed and get up to go to the bathroom and eat.  I could not walk or straighten up my back.  I did what he said and after a week it got a lot better.  Why this happened I couldn't say and he didn't know what caused it. I am not sure what a microdecetomy surgery does to fix your problem.  Maybe you can explain it to me.  There are so many new procedures surfacing and whether they are good or not, the question remains.  You are in the healing stage and you have to take care of the back.  This pain should be normal and after a short time, maybe a month or so, the pain should subside.  If it goes on longer than 3 months, and got worse, then it has to be checked out as it now becomes chronic.  Make certain you have a good pain specialist and neurologist for further investigation.  Try not to have more surgeries if you can as I found out it is not always helpful.  The neurologist will take X-rays, MRI's and CAT scans for further investigation.  According to their finding, they can refer you to a neuro surgeon and they will try to talk you into more surgery.  That is their fortae and make lots of money doing it.  They don't mind doing it as that is their bread and butter so to speak.  Oh, they will tell you this and that and why you need it when you really may not.  Definately get a second and even a third opinion to make certain that you need it.  Just don't take it for granted.  This happened to me as well.  The end result is still more pain over my whole body except for sharp pain when the doctors check for trigger points.  So now, I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue and depression because there seems no end to it.  Don't worry too much now and give time to heal.  It took me over 2 years trying to find out what the cause was.  Being that you are young, you should heal and hopefully remedy the problem.  I would investigate other methods such as certain exercises, meditation, self hypnosis, massage, warm water, heat and even accupuncture.  This takes time so best if you do research on it.  I hope this helped you some and that is why I am here.  Good luck in this and hopefully, you will heal well and go on with living your life.  My best to you.

A Microdisectomy is when the surgeon, Neuro or Ortho will shave off the part of the disc that is bulging to free up the nerve that it's pressing on. It's not a new procdure, been around since the 1930-40s but is the least invasive to cure decompression of the nerve.

thanks for your help as well as some terminology is Greek to me.  I didn't know that this procedure was done in ancient time.  just kidding.  It's nice to know that everyone here is helpful.  Have a nice day.

Give it time, you may have some soft tissue damage due to surgery , as I have, been 12 weeks since mine, and I have suffered very very much with pain, had another scan, saw surgeon 3 weeks ago, that's what he's told me, seeing him again on tues, but the last 3-4 days I'm showing some improvement at last, I hope, I tried a lot of things for pain relief , and also had a steroid jab, it might sound stupid , but I brought a elastic acted back support from Amazon , since wearing it , that's when I started to improve, coincidence !! I don't know, but like I said, I was prepared to try anything.

hope your pain eases shortly, anyone who's had sciatic pain, will know what it's like. All the best.
