Is it possible that my awful diet growing up has caused my blood vessels to become weak at 21 yo?

I used to eat a lot of high sodium and sugar growing up. Like boxes of candy or big bags of chips every other weekend from about 13 to 20. I want to change my diet but am scared my past habits have damaged my body. I’ve read blood vessel issues can cause death. Is it possible I could have a high level of damage to my blood vessel walls already and is it possible to reverse this damage?

Hi. Firstly a poor diet will definitely cause you all sorts of health problems, eg high BP, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc., and these are just a few of the problems. Weak blood vessels as you put it, can be caused by a number of reasons, not always dietary, sometimes hereditary. The main problems with an unhealthy diet are those I've listed above but a poor diet can also lead to fat building up around vital organs, particularly the liver. At your age, it's definitely not too late to change your habits and protect your future health and you may prevent damage altogether. Start now and you'll start to feel the benefits immediately.

Alijah, Best you get into good lifestyle habits.Lose weight ,eat a healthy mix of fruit and vegetables, cut the carbs, eat oily fish and do some regular exercise. You can reverse any build up of cholesterol in your blood vessels. Why not have your cholesterol levels and blood pressure checked at your surgery or pharmacy? If OK you have nothing to worry about but persist in good lifestyle habits.

I'm pretty horrified at the stuff I used to eat, too, but especially younger bodies are capable of handling a lot of bad habits without permanent damage.

In a way, it doesn't even matter, does it, you can't change the past. So just do what you can today and that's the best plan going forward.
