Is my leg/groin pain because of my dermoid cyst?

Hi there, I've had a dermoid cyst on my left ovary since I was 16, I'm now 28 - it's grown a little but not much over the years and is what the doctors see as a relatively small cyst at 3.5cm.

My cyst has always given me a small twinging pain every now & then but was nothing that concerned me. Over the past 5yrs however, I've had a pain in my leg/groin that has progressively gotten worse. The pain is numbing, tingling, makes my leg feel cold & initiates in my left butt cheek going down to my inner thigh and all the way down to my feet along with the deep groin pain.

At first I didn't think the leg/groin pain was anything to do with my cyst so I went to see a back specialist (thinking the pain might be sciatica), after numerous MRI scans on my back, leg and pelvis and nerve conduction studies - everything is normal.

The only reason I am certain the pain is linked with my cyst now is that the pain becomes significantly worse a week before my period, during/after sex or when using a tampon. I'm thinking of having it removed but the doctors seem to think it won't make a difference because my cyst is relatively small? One doctor suggested the possibility of endometriosis? Are these symptoms of endometriosis?

I'm at a dead end & wanted to know if anyone has the same or a similar problem & how they dealt with it because the doctors all seem to be clueless! Want to be sure before I sign for surgery to have the cyst removed.

Really appreciate any responses. Thank you.

    Hi Nunu,

I have a cyst as well just a bit bigger than yours and I get leg pain, tingling, and numbness. When I spoke to my doctor about this she told me it could be the cyst as that is causing my hormones to be irratic and that can cause leg aching. Since having a laparoscopy and looking at the cyst I have found the leg pain in my left leg has been a lot worse and yes it does get worse at that time of month too.

Have you been referred to a gynaecologist to discuss this? Also if you have a mirena coil it can cause leg aches.

    Kind regards

      Hi Leanne

Thanks for your reply - it's consoling that I'm not going insane thinking the cyst is causing my leg pain. I have seen 2 gynaes who both seem to think the cyst is unrelated to my leg pain & say a laparoscopy will not help but I've come to a point now where I just want it out to see if it does reduce the pain!

When you say they did a laparoscopy on you - what did they do? Was it just investigatory? I've asked the gynae to look for endometriosis whilst in there as I've been told this could be a possibility?

      Warm regards

      Hi Nunu,

My laparoscopy was not planned. I had been going to docs and hospital since January regarding pains. I have a coil so I didn't get periods. The pain got so severe that I went back to docs on 30th august but he said it was my appendix so he sent me straight to hospital they also thought it was my appendix so they operated they then found it wasn't my appendix i have 6cm cyst on my right overy. They left my appendix but also looked around everything looked ok so no endometriosis just some little cyst on left and the bigger one on right. They have now referred me to a gynaecologist where they will decide what to do next I also don't know what type of cyst I have as because it was an emergency laparoscopy so was done by a general surgeon and not an expert. I am still waiting to hear from the gynaecologist and they have given me some co codamol ready for when the pain starts up again next week.

      Kind regards
