Is oral cancer inevitable?

I just did some research and it looks like there is a strong association between oral lichen planus and the epstein barr virus?  I recently found out i have EBV and i truly believe the virus was activated back in January when i was taking arginine supplements (they deplete lysine) and also recovering from the flu and dealing with a lot of stress at the time.  I just had two laser treatments on my tongue and now fear that the EBV will attack the damaged tissue. I have been taking immune supplements and lysine to keep the EBV at bay so hopefully that will aid in the tissue regeneration but if i have EBV and a history or oral ulcerations is that pretty much a guarantee that i will get oral cancer at some point down the road?

I certainly do not believe that.  There are other contributing factors often when it goes into cancer...like smoking, chewing tobacco, poor diet, etc.  Eat healthy, take a probiotic and keep good oral hygiene...and keep a good upbeat attitude.

I think its highly unlikely..I never think about cancer because it serves no purpose, and worrying changes nothing.  How is your tongue feeling and looking now that you have had two laser treatments, do you feel like it is helping at all.

Hello all, i am new to this forum.  About 2 months ago i noticed that my gums were changing, some whitish and reddish areas.  Had no idea what it was so went to see my dentist who said it looked like i had lichen planus.  Had never heard of it before.  I have always taken extremely good care of my teeth so i am totally puzzled.  My doctor said it could come and go and there is not much to do about it, it is the immune system attacking that part of my body.  Now i am reading what you are saying and it scares me.

Hi Kaleani - as i mentioned to Guppy you may want to get tested for epstein barr.  seems that virus is what could be triggering OLP.
