Is ovary removal really necessary?

I was diagnosed with a simple ovarian cyst measuring 7.0 x 6,0 x 6.5 cm. via ultrasound. Doc wants to remove the ovary, and tube. Is it really necessary to remove the ovary? I am beyond child bearing years, but have no family history of cancer, no free fluid. I know that our ovaries put out small amounts of hormones until the day we die, so want to keep it. Shouldn't I also have an MRI before cutting? Had a CA125, waiting for results.

Hi Kathleen, I had to have my ovary removed along with a cyst, as the cyst was wrapped round the ovary, plus when he got inside, ther were lots of adhesions from a previous hysterectomy.

I had to sign the consent form beforehand for the ovary to be removed if necessary, though if you said you wanted to keep yours, I think they would take it into consideraion and try to save it.

Why is it that some doctors are so keen to cut you up?

My mum had a total hysterectomy because of cysts and heavy periods. It really floored her and she took months to get over it. She was 53 at the time. We are quite convenced that if she had put up with it for another few months the menopause would have kicked in and seen an end to the problem. History has repeated itself with me AND my sister - both offered hysterectomys for cysts, both declined. Sister is fine, my cyst is SLOWLY resolving with no OP, just time.

Is the cyst bothering you? If not I'd see what the CA125 has to say and just monitor the cyst.

Let me know how you go on.

Hi Bobbygirl, I also have an ovarian cyst and doc wants to remove it and says I have to sign a waiver to say he has permission to take my ovary.. he thinks it's an endometrius cyst.. I only have one ovary and I don't want it taken.. my left ovary had a dermoid Tumor so they had to take it cos it was all entwined in the ovary, but I don't understand why they just can't watch it.. so annoying! Just take it and force me into menopause and hrt.. both my parents have suffered DVT and that's aside effect of hrt.. still putting my life at risk!

Mine is a simple cyst. But when it was first found they couldn't see the ovary for the cyst. It seems to be resolving itself without surgery. If you have no other unpleasant or painful symptoms, perhaps you should ask them to just monitor the situation. I think it is just easier for them to operate - 'job done' and leave you to pick up the pieces.

I had a very large cyst removed surgically. My doctor suggested removing both my Fallopian tubes as research has shown most malignant cysts travel through them. I already had two children so I felt it best to be safe rather than sorry. I have no family history of either breast or ovarian cancer, however prior to surgery and post neoplasm analysis I had a 50 percent odd of my cyst being malignant. I was fortunate to be cleared of cancer. All the best to you.

    Hi,

I am 25 years old and wondering that if my one ovary is removed (surgery) will I still be able to get pregnant on the other (one) ovary ?

    Please do let me know.

    Thank You.
