Is prostitis causing my baseline PSA to be high ?

Hi All,

I have recently been diagnosed with Chronic Bacterial prostatitis. After giving me doxycycline for a month my urologist asked me to get a Total and free PSA test. My total PSA before I started medication for 1.3 and right after I finished my course my PSA measured 1.2. My urologist told me that the change is my PSA was clinically insignificant. While my urine shows no bacteria, I was asked to do a semen test and they found a particular bacteria in my semen. I have been prescribed sulfamethoxazole for 14 days now, to be taken twice a day. Its been about 4 days since I started with sulfamethoxazole, I have no side effects (which is good) but the ache and pain around my abdomin is still there. I had two questions

  1. Has anyone else been on sulfamethoxazole ? How long does it take to start taking effect ?
  2. Does anyone have experience of seeing thier PSA drop after curing prostatitis ?
  3. I am 41 year old and the median total PSA level at my age is 0.6-0.7. While 1.2 is normal its is slightly elevated. I am not sure if its 1.2 becuase of prostatitis or if its just my normal reading.
  4. The reason I am concerned about my PSA is that studies done to stratify screening frequencies for prostate cancer seem to suggest that men between 40-49 years who have more than 1.0 PSA are more likely to develop Prostate Cancer than those that have PSA <1.0 in their 40s. Here is a link to to study

My Urologists and doctors don't seem to be worried at all, but I do have anxiety issues and its driving me crazy. This situation is not helping my prostatitis and I really really want to get rid of my prostatitis. My prostatis is likely been their for more than a year.
