Is there a difference between Lichen Planus and Sclerosis

Posted , 7 users are following.

I have been told that I have Lichen Planus and another doctor (dermatologist) said it was Sclerosis.  Either way I am having difficulty as it is in the vulva area.  I keep having to put steroid cream and the latest advice was do it for 8 weeks.  This flare up is just 6 months after I last experience one.  It worries me to have all this cream on my body and wonder if anyone has another bit of advice for this aggravating condition.

    Hi Bianca,

Generally, Lichen Sclerosis is outside and Lichen Planus is inside. Most of us, except the alternative girls, are prescribed either Clobetasol or Dermovate (same thing), more often to begin, tapering down to no less that two nights a week. It's not meant to simply improve symptoms. It's meant to provide a steady low dose for the rest of our lives. LS does go into remission. (I've has LS my whole long life and have had years at a time of comfortable sex.) But when it's flaring, scarring and architecture flattening can happen very quickly.

The talk for years was that the cream caused the thinning of skin. Recent studies have made that less likely. I see the cream as the lesser of two evils.

There are reams of excellent advice in this forum. Do browse through. No soap down there. Loose cotton panties. Try to eat a healthy diet.

You could certainly have both. Anyway, worry is worse than any drug, I find.

it is entitrely possible that you have both Bianca. Biopsies can tell from the different cell structures caused by LP and LS.

Try to just use a pea sized squeeze of the clobetasol.

( Thank you for the info re difference betweenthe  cream and ointment Morrell.)

It’s something really hurts and itches more at night time. Now that’s I’m my case ,feels as if my skin blistered . Not only that my skin feels thin . There’s red patchy discoloration only on one side. Cream only helps for awhile until it flares up again.  Tight clothes only irritate it more. Help please! I it gives you enlightenment on your situation.

Hi there.  My sister told me about a new treatment for Auto Immune Diseases called  Low dose Naltrexone.  Someone reported success with this for Lichen Planus.  I am going to ask my Dermatologist about this for my LS.  Perhaps worth investigating or speaking to your Dermatologist.  Good luck.
