Is there any point going to the derm with this disease?

Hi, i'm a self diagnosed 24 year old male, and i'm 110% i've got HS...

Is there really any point going to the derm? The thought of showing these disgusting holes and scars to anyone is scary enough in itself, and since there is no cure, and very limited treatments (as from what i've been able to read online), i'd rather not go. It feels like i'm just going to get the disease confirmed, which i have been able to do myself, and then proceed to pay a lot of money... i don't really see the point.

Any tips? And if anyone got any tips on hiding the holes, and the smell, so i can have a normal sex life, i'd appreciate the advice!

Thanks

You may try a Hibclens wash to help with the smell. In regards to healing the holes, Tumeric has been a help to me. It is completely up to you if you seek a Derm. However depending on the stage you are in medicines may help. I personally do not respond to the antibiotic treatments or Humeria treatments. However, I have heard testimony from people that it does help. Make sure in regards to washing the area keep it clean and dry throughout the day. Use the wash at- least 2-3 times daily.

Personally, I don’t to think it’s worth going to the derm. I used to go once every month or so when I was in high school, and if I had an active abscesses she would inject it with steroids to make it drain faster. But, after doing that a few times I found it wasn’t worth it because they inject it with a needle which is insanely painful and then the cyst feels swollen and painful for a few hours before it would drain. I love my derm, she really knows what she’s talking about and was a good resource to have for questions! But in terms of having scheduled appointments I stopped because there was no treatment that was really helping and no pertinent questions that I had. Maybe make one appointment with a dermatologist just so you can be established with one. Then, if for whatever reason, you need to see a derm there’s one who already knows your background and that you know you like/trust. But in terms of scheduling multiple appointments, I don’t think it’s worth it.

Hi George! You should definitely make an appointment with a dermatologist in your area that in well versed in HS. You can google that.  Since you’ve never been treated or diagnosed, you may see some improvements with whatever treatment is prescribed.   Also, you need to establish care, stage and treatment plan if you ever have to apply for Social Security Disability.  I’ve been on multiple abx, was on Humira for a year, which seemed to work well initially, but it too bottomed out. Finally, you should probably go to a dermatologist at least 2x a year for this. I’ve been diagnosed for 6 years now and 2017  has been the worse. Been to the dermatologist more times than I can count. I’ve tried cleansers in the past, which made it worse.  I’ve cried so much this year because of HS.  I also understand not wanting to go the doctor because of this condition, but you really need to. I’m hope you do find some relief!  Good luck!!

Hi George! I, honestly, think you should go see a dermatologist. It will help a lot with the holes and the smell. They can help you with taking better care of the areas that are flared up. I have been seeing a derm for a little over a year and I can tell he really wants to help. You go and get diagnosed first and just take it from there. I had to learn, my bad I’m still learning that being ashamed only makes the problem worst. I was ashamed to tell someone about my condition for the first year when it started to flare up because I was afraid that I had did something wrong but soon learned that it wasn’t anything I did wrong just something that happens more frequently to thousands of people across the globe. Again you should definitely go see someone ASAP! Good Luck!

i have had this for 33 years on and off. Mainly on! Please try the turmeric capsules as only two weeks ago I started taking these and the three lumps I had round my groin area have gone. Can only put it down to using these. I also wash with hibiscrub which you can get on prescription or buy on amazon for around £5. Wishing you all the best fo 2018 and hope you get better soon xx
