Is there anyone else who has mostly knee pain referred from hip OA instead of hip pain?

Hi, since last Fall I have been having sharp pain in my knee area. I've had xrays & MRIs of my knee, my back & my hip. My knee checked out fine. I do have some OA in my back, & moderate to severe OA in my hip. 2 surgeons later & a psysiatrist ( along with 2 steroid shots in my hip ( the last one worsened my knee pain) confirmed to them that I needed a THR.. which is now scheduled for mid Sept. My big fear is that although I probably need a new left hip.. is that the pain is actually being referred from my back somehow. I asked the Drs. & my surgeon said most people have hip & groin pain, but that I was one of the few where the was hip problem referred the pain to about 6 " above my knee, in my knee & sometimes below my knee. I guess I'm just looking to find another person that has the same symptoms as I have and had a hip replacement & voila the knee pain is gone. I would appreciate any input.

I had a childhood hip problem than the syptom is always referred pain in the knee. Slipped epyphis. I had it operated on at aged 12 and no more knee pain. 40 years later i developed OA in same hip and the old knee pain came back, tho I had hip pain too, but in bed and resting the knee pain was bad. Consultant told me referred pain from femoral nerve. 5 weeks after hip replacement and the knee pain was immediately gone. I had pain in the hip area as to be expected but as original op all those years ago not the knee. I asked my surgeon too see old hip joint and the worn area was to outer part of joint and inner part ok. Maybe groin pain if inner area worn, as I never had groin pain that I know is common. Only my theory of course! I delayed my hip replacement and suddenly deteriorated and was horrendous and wish had took my surgeons advice when he said was time. Hope all goes well and let us know how it all goes.x

I have the same pains on the right side now, my knee really hurts when climbing steps, right hip needs to be replaced, probably will have that hip replaced next year.

Loral, you don't know how comforting it has been to realize that I was not going crazy with doubting the Drs. saying after all the tests that I definitely needed THR. I only have knee pain! ( I shouldn't say only cuz I can hardly walk without shooting pain in my knee.) I also have some OA in my back, so I kept thinking what if the pain in my knee is from my back & I go ahead with THR & I still have knee pain. Well I do have moderate to severe OA in my hip so I need it replaced for sure & will see after the surgery if my knee pain goes. I will let you all know the outcome. Thanks for your input.

Hi again.. just proves to me that each person is different & diagnosis is a process of tests & Drs. opinions. So, pick Drs. who you trust , evaluate all the info to come to a decision about what to do. I started with being sure that I needed a knee-replacement. I also knew that I have a not so great back ( have had 2 bouts of sciatica.) I was very surprised to find out that I needed hip replacement. It was the furthest thing from my mind so I kept questioning having THR. I am now at the place that I feel good about having the surgery, & am hopeful I will have no knee pain as an outcome. Sorry you had to suffer for 2 year as I know how debilitating knee pain is. Am so glad that you now are pain free yay!

Hi Merilee!
Yes, I have knee pain AND weakness in my left knee that Doc says I need a thr in that hip as well. Had trhp last Sept. but never had knee pain on that side. Just groin pain. This one I don't have so much groin pain, but Doc say the knee pain is 80% hip and only 20% knee. I also have some arthritis going on in my lower back. (but I don't think there's much they can do about that area) Seems to me that the back and hips are kind of all tied together, but?? I as well would like to hear of someone that if they also had knee pain, the thr kind of eliminated that problem or at least lessened it.

Hi Terri, it seems like we are not the only ones in the world to have just knee pain that is being referred from our hip OA. If you read through the threads in this discussion you will see others who had the same knee pain & their outcomes. For me it has very encouraging, because I thought I was the only one! Am having THR in Sept. & hope I won't have any more knee pain. I will let everyone know the outcome. Are you scheduled for surgery? Good luck & let us know if it corrects your knee pain.. here's hoping!

Oh my word yes. I had a R-THR last year because my knee hurt so much!
It all started with what I thought was a twisted knee resulting in a visit to my GP, who referred me to a knee specialist, who couldn't find anything wrong with my knee and insisted that I had X-rays of my hips. Diagnosis was immediate - severe osteoarthritis causing bone on bone in both hips and then confirmed by hip specialist. Only solution THR!
The diagnosis came as a real shock I didn't realise I had osteoarthritis and there is no history of the same in the family (on either side).
I had my first THR last June and will have the second one this September.
It was definitely a roller coaster ride last year but had a good result. Just need the matching set now so that I can restart my gym membership.

Hi! I was sure that I needed knee replacement the pain is so bad, but my knee MRI & X-rays showed good knees! Had tests on hip & found moderate to severe OA. Am having min posterior done mid September. Good luck to you with your second surgery. Are you pain free after your June surgery?

Hi Merilee
I can so sympathise with the knee pain issue - I tend to avoid going to the doctors on a matter of principal and it took nearly a year with constant (as I thought) knee trouble before I went. It never occured to me that it could be referred pain and that I would end up on the operating table with major hip surgery.
Pain free? - yes, pretty much so. I still get aches and twinges from the new hip, but nowhere near the constant, sleep-depriving pain of a hip with bone-on-bone action.
An artificial hip is most definitely not as good as the one you're born with, but a million times better than a hip with OA.
To be honest, I wish I didn't have the need for the second THR but as there isn't any other way of sorting it out, another hip replacement I must have!

hi chloeparrot,
of course you wish you wouldn't need the 2nd hip surgery - for me though, it was quite a relief when the dat was there - I was in so much pain - the "new" hip could not heal properly and was overburdened while the other one was bone on bone ... oh, the euphoric feeling of being pain free from that after surgery .....
I had so much more confidence and was less fearful - still not a walk in the park though, but so much better -
just come here any time ...
angel blessings

Hi Renee
Nice to hear from you as always.
I know I'm being unrealistic but I wish there was a way of repairing the original hip and therefore doing away with the need to replace it......
Oh well, you can but hope!
