is this a polyp?????

for about 3 or 4 years ,i think, i have had a strange lump thing in my nose. I noticed it when my nose became blocked once and when i tried to blow it, whatever was inside my nose was ....not quite sure how to explain it, flapping almost  . it then became painful and annoying. I have read that people get headaches and i dont recall getting any but i do get short sharp migrane type headaches in my eye socket every now and then, and by now and then i mean once every month or so. I've been to the doctor but they said it was just inflamed from the summer, but that was a long time ago and it hasnt gone away since. I do suffer from hayfever but it had been better recently and the thing still hasnt gone. If i do start sneezing and get a bit hayfevery then it will get huge and block it completley. otherwise i can breathe better but normally with a slight block.

is it a polyp???? please reply.

I had very similar (still do) symptoms as you and it is very possible that you have nasal Polyps. I have difficulty blowing my nose and the same flapping sensation occurs. I used a small flashlight and looked up my nasal passage and could see a fleshy cream colored polyp blocking my nasal passage.

I went to the doctor and got a prescription for a nasal steroid spray and I am on antibiotics for a resulting sinus infection. I saw a GP and it was a chore to even get her to look up my nose, which she did for about a nano second. A GP may have difficulty properly diagnosing this condition. If you have to, INSIST on seeing a specialist. Don't wait like I did because I now have a sinus infection and will probably end up having to get surgery.

    Hi Stephani,

Read with interest your comments re:polyps. Strongly encourage you to have an appointment made with your local ENT clinic asp. I experienced similar things to you for several years, doctors only prescribing sprays etc.

Eventually I asked one doctor to look carefully to see what was causing the problem and it turned out to be a polyp. Being in only one nostril caused some alarm and an appt made to see a consultant as matter of urgency. Four weeks later I had FESS. Surgery to remove an inverted papilloma. This is a polyp that is a tumour. Mine proved to be benign but was locally aggressive to the structure it was growing on. I had a second operation 7th Jan 09 to remove residue from 1st op.together with half tear duct. The longer you leave it the more difficult it becomes.

    Best wishes

      Hi Stephani,

I had what was thought to be a polyp removed in office, it came back as an inverted papilloma so 3 weeks later has guidence surgery done. Was told that middle turbinate was removed and ethmoid air cells and bone under middle turbinate. I am just a week out of surgery and healing well. I was just wondering how you are doing any reoccuance issues? I ony had symptoms for about 1 year I was told I had a polyp given nasal spray and steroids, they polyp was still there three weeks later but I coiuld breath pretty well so they left it . Last fall I got fall allergies and my symptoms came back and led up to where I am now recovering from a pretty aggressive surgery. I am just worried about reoccurances.

      thanks,

      simon
