Is this a post-ORIF infection?

Hi all, I had ORIF surgery on my trimalleolar ankle fracture 5 weeks ago. I had no pain at all once the screws and plates were in, and after 10 days I got the stitches out, all fine. Again, no pain for about a week after the stitches were removed, but then my leg swelled and since then my wound/scar is agony.

It feels like the wound is open and rubbing against the cast, I also get stabbing pains in it, and whichever way I lie down is so painful because it's either having the wound-side of the leg pressing against the bed, or gravity weighing down the cast onto the wound if I lie the other way. Night times are worse, I've been up in tears most nights.

I just want to look at it but of course I cant, but I never thought a broken ankle should sting so much, especially occurring after 2 and a half weeks pain-free after the surgery.

I'm reluctant to go sit in hospital for hours if this is normal, (as the fracture clinic said I can't make an appointment to check it; I just have to turn up and wait).

I'm getting the cast off on January 3rd, should I wait until then?

Thanks!

If it was me I think I’d go and have the cast checked - if it is an infection the sooner it’s caught the better, but it may be that your cast isn’t a very good fit anymore as your swelling has increased/decreased from when you had the cast on - a new cast may make it more comfortable ? And at least you can put your mind to rest by seeing the incision for yourself. Good luck with your recovery x

I think if your ankle has swollen and your in pain you should get it looked at. Go to the hospital, if you wait until the new year it may be dangerous! Seriously, get it sorted. It could be an infection!

Go! I got my cast off and was prescribed a post op boot.  Mine was six months ago.  I just had hardware removed Friday!
