Is this anxiety? Persistent throat clearing

Posted , 2 users are following.

For about a month I have felt a constant need to clear my throat. It feels like there is thick saliva / phlegm stuck at the back of my throat which I can't clear properly. It makes me feel quite anxious because I feel like I'm going to choke. As a result, I'm finding it difficult to stop clearing my throat constantly. I also take omeprazole for GERD and antihistamines / nasal sprays for allergies. Both haven't made much difference. The throat clearing gets worse during times of stress and I have experienced this on and off for a number of years. Does this sound like anxiety?

it could be anxiety related but it could also be caused by dehydration, allergies, etc. Make sure you are drinking lots of water every day.

I get that feeling once in a while and I know how annoying it can feel. I do have seasonal allergies.

Sometimes when I drink some warm tea with honey it helps.

Maybe your doctor would have some ideas of what you can do for it., Especially an ear nose and throat doctor. hope you feel better soon!

Thank you! I have been to ENT lately for a separate issue and they recommended antihistamines, nasal sprays, a nasal wash etc. I've spoken with my GP who suggested it is probably anxiety related - I'm already taking medication for GERD and allergies. It's just quite frustrating though as the need to clear my throat isn't going away! The GP did mention increasing fluid intake.
