Is this fungus?

Hello all,

I've had this problem a while now but I haven't seen anyone about it. One of my toenails just refuses to grow normally and it hurts when i cut it, feels like it grows thicker and ''further up'' strongly attached to the flesh? My toe nails are weird already, the small ones are barely visible and deep into the skin so I thought maybe this was a random anomaly too, especially since my indexes are longer than the thumb so wearing shoes can become painful. I thought maybe that was at fault, but my other toe is not like that (the skin on the edge is hard though on both due to shoes). Taking a picture made me notice the other nails look yellowish too and I'm freaking out a bit. (Both feet to compare.) Thoughts?

One of the best things I ever did was to visit a chiropodist. The lovely Irish lady sorted out all my foot and nail problems. She even gave me a foot massage. It cost thirty five pounds and was worth every penny.

A thickening of toenails can occur due to a fungal infection. This is more likely if the nails also become discoloured and crumbly. The best way to find out is by taking the advice of a dermatologist. Your dermatologist could, for example, examine a nail sample under the microscope or grow a culture.

Another thing I noticed is that you cut your toenails way to short. Toenails should be trimmed to a rectangular shape and never too short. This is will help prevent ingrown nails.

    Thank you for your answers.

My toenails are deep into the skin both from the tip of the toes and go deep into the flesh so when they grow they don't protrude for easy handling, are thin too, so it's frustrating to spend so much time on them just to clip, so I just clip them however and get it done with. Though yes as you say I probably shouldn't be doing that!
