Is this Hiatus Hernia

Ive been not feeling right for well over a year now. I went to docs with the feeling I could not take a deep breath. This was my first symptom. Doc notice d a fast heart beat . After extensive tests, my heart is fine-defo not that. However I have the following symptoms-I've given up going to the doctor as they just don't seem to find a solution.

*Shallow breaths-oxygen level fine.

*Feeling of a swollen or blocked throat-no real pain as such-just discomfort. I have had a throat endoscopy-didn't go further down as he was looking more at my thyroid. However he said I had lots of Reflux and prescribed months and months worth of Omaz-something or other which I took and made me feel worse so stopped.

*Burning pain in between my breasts, especially in the morning and a night-like the breast bone is sore.

*Constipation-I can look 6 months pregnant with bloating at times too.

*Nausea-sometimes I feel sick for no reason-struggle to eat large amounts.

Pain in middle and left of back-almost a burning pain inside.

*Total intolerance to fatty meats. I LOVE pork belly but can't touch it.

*Tight feeling in solar plexus and feeling full-sometimes I can feel something catching against my ribs.

I do get heartburn occasionally but I wouldn't say that is a major problem for me.

I really do not want to rely on Google for my answers but uninterested doctors just seem to mutter 'anxiety'. I AM NOT ANXIOUS! Quite the opposite. Bloods all fine, liver a little off (I'm teetotal). I just want to find out so I can get better.

Considering a private MRI of the area just to know for sure. However a friend mentioned she felt very similar when she had a HH and her entire stomach was in her lung cavity!

Does this sound like HH?

Thanks in advance.

Lu.

    Hi Lucy

Personally I would push for a full endoscopy, this will show conclusively whether you have a h/hernia also they will have a good look at your stomach.

    Best wishes.

    Dear Lu,

I am so sorry you are having these awful symptoms.  I am struggling with the very same and I have a hiatal hernia.  I would get an EGD scope done by a gastroenterologist asap.  A hiatal hernia impacts the diaphragm and can cause heart palpitations and chest pain that feels like a heart attack.  You are not crazy.  You have many symptoms that match hiatal hernia.  Blessings and hope you get answers and feel better soon.  I hurt for you because unless you have lived it, you cannot understand the suffering.  It can be TERRIBLE.  Big hugs

Thank you. I started to believe the anxiety hype even though it’s not in my character at all and show no other characteristics of this. I’m a relaxed happy person with a lovely family and home life.

I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Hi Christa, do you also have a heital hernia if so is it a small or big one?

So you get chest pains on your left side and like squeezing pains in your sternum, and sharp pain in the center of your back?

I am experiencing these I done ecg, bloods and x ray heart came back clear, but everyday I experience these pains even when I don’t eat...I look forward to hearing about yours?

      God bless

Thank you. Would an MRI not show conclusively? I’m under a ENT consultant but other than being told i have bad reflux and lots of gas (ultrasound) I’m actually still waiting on the written results and follow up six months later.

I just want answers, fed up of feeling like this. Generally being unwell. I didn’t mention that my job involves lots of heavy lifting (domestic appliances). Perhaps this may have contributed?

I have been patient, i feel frustrated that google is potentially the key to diagnosis when a medical professional can’t seem to pin it down!

An ENT does not do full EGD scopes that would look at your hiatus and lower esophageal sphincter.  You need to see a GI.  I work with both an ENT and a GI.  The GI is the one who found the problem.

Thank you. Not easy in the UK. We are reliant upon an underfunded overcrowded NHS. Doc thinks two problems (chest and gastric) are unrelated. Told me to continue taking antacid medication.

      Unrelated ? Really ?

Its well documented that chest pain and reflux are connected

acid from your stomoch around chest cavity is going to cause pain

get rid of the reflux and the chest pain will probably go

      almost definety

Hi Lucy,I was having very similar symptoms, last December ,I would actual vomit when I was brushing my teeth, couldn’t hardly eat food ,I just felt stuffed after a few mouthfuls also nauseous, also a continuous cough.i had an endoscopy in jan and was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and gastritis.Gastritis is a inflamed esophogus.Which caused me to feel really poorly  and lost 10pounds in weight.Doctor prescribe me PPIs which healed it.But I still suffer from acid reflux but not from the symptoms as before.Maybe you could have a endoscopy done to find out if you have got the same problem for sure.lots of people can have similar symptoms but could actually be caused by different problems. You need to sure ,so then you can get proper treatment .Ive been on PPIs for 9mth and I’m starting to come of them gradually .If you do have the same problem you need to follow a diet for the reflux, look that up ,as it’s to lengthy to explain all that .Hope you can get it sorted .

    Hi Lu

I'm really sorry to hear that you're suffering however feel relieved that I am not going mad. For almost a year I have had similar symptoms as yourself, I've been given antihistamines and nasal sprays for rhinitis which haven't worked. My symptoms Tom's have been irritated throat which effects my nose and ears sometimes, along with belching all the time, constipation, pain in my chest, difficulty breathing.

I am off to the GP on Friday as the problem had been going on since last December two months after I gave up smoking, unsure if its related or just a coincidence. Please up date of any improvements that you may have, good look and take care.

I’ve been to the doctor this morning. Described all the symptoms listed here. His reply was to contact the ENT doctor I am under to ask if he has any intention of continuing treatment. Planned to refer me to a chest specialist.

He dismissed any mention of HH. I just don’t know what doll to do. Feeling very frustrated and that I’m getting nowhere fast. We are not able to self refer-how on earth do I get checked for this?

Can I ask what treatment the ENT Dr has given you and what have they diagnosed you with? Have you tried visiting a different GP for a second opinion.

The ENT did a laparoscopy on my throat as they thought i May have a thyroid issue. My speech is very soft. I struggle to shout.

He said Thyroid seemed ok and blood tests showed no issues. That’s when he saw lots of reflux. It only went to throat not further down.

No diagnosis. Just reflux and lots of antacid meds.

Hi Lucy, did you ever get a diagnosis for your symptoms? I have a hiatal hernia and suffer from the same symptoms as yours once in a while. Been experiencing a burning pain in my ribs today and I wonder if that's a symptom of gastritis /hiatal hernia chest pain?
