Is this medication combination normal?

Worried about my mum.. Diagnosed with 'sick sinus syndrome' December last year (happy Christmas), she had a pacemaker fitted in March 2014 and has been on 10mg of bisoprolol a day, and yesterday went on an additional 5mg a day of flecainide.

She is generally an active young 69 year old. Prior to the diagnosis she was dizzy, tired and feeling faint - had palpatations and a racing heart. Apparantly this was all due to the heart missing beats (sick sinus) accompanied by an abnormal (fast) heart beat.

Following the first follow up visit back to the hospital, it found the pacemaker was working well and kicking in when the heart skipped beats. The heartbeat itself was still too fast - up to 190 bpm on 2000 occasions over the 6 weeks. Hence the introduction of flecainide they say.

Mum is still tired and out of breath, she finds it exhausting to walk round the corner and feels her legs are so heavy its too tiring to walk.

From reading some of the other discussions on these forums I'm wondering if the bisoprolol is too high a dose... It didn't bring the heartrate down following the introduction of the pacemaker (maybe that not what bisoprolol does?), and now she'll be on 5mg of flecainide as well.

Does anyone have any opions or similar experiences? Thank you.

My heart beat was 140/160 for 3 months and bisop did nothing to lower it. Consultant chose Digoxin (not flecainide) and it brought heart beat down within a period of time (can't remember how long though) that was 4 years ago.

Bisop now 3,75 spread over 3 dosages.

Had pacemaker fitted 6 months ago which maintained heart beat at 60 so "pauses" as suffered by your mum also eradicated.

Do suffer from af but better with digoxin although it is a rate controller rather than rhythm controller.

Unfortunately 1 cure does not fit all as you can see from the responses don't give up questioning medical staff until your mum improves.

I 'Know' how your mum feels, when taking Bisoprolol..As I've commented before all these symptoms were just awful in my case.I was taking it just a short time for high blood pressure (didn't work for that) I quickly weaned myself that stuff! My Doctor's gone another way which is working for me.I'm back to normal again ACTIVE..and at work(heavy manual) So You've reminded me of some of those symptoms again-Missed Heartbeats-Depressed-Really ReallyTired-Really Breathless-Feet and Hands that Just Looked Old.sorry I'm going on a bit but that's how it was for me.I'm 66 by the way  (I just cut tablets into smaller and smaller parts to stop)anyway good luck with Mum ..Kind Regards.
