Is This Vertigo? How can I restore my balance?

Two weeks ago I woke up around 6:35 am. The minute I opened my eyes it looked as if the entire room was spinning. Every time I tried moving my head, the room felt like it was spinning and I would get terribly dizzy but if I laid completely still, I was fine. It was so bad that I couldn't get out of bed and had to call campus security to open the door and help me out of my bed (my bed is lofted). I thought I was fine afterwards so I never went to the doctor. Boy was I wrong. On Monday after I had returned home for Fall Break, I had another episode while laying in the dentist chair during a proceedure which was quite embarrassing since I'm pretty sure I scared the crap out of the dentist and her assistant. Then I had another episode on Thursday morning. Though this one was quick and I was able to walk myself through it this time, ever since then it has left me with this terrible short but sharp reoccuring pain in my left ear and an annoying, foggy and unsteady feeling like I'm on a boat or I'm falling in the opposite direction mainly when I sit or stand still. I experience it also when I'm walking but if I keep walking for a while, it doesn't affect me as much but walking is still a chore. Deciding I had had enough of this, I went to the campus nurse who reffered me to a clinic. So I went there, got seen by a physician whose diagnosis seemed to be all over the place. She cleaned and looked into my ears and said that she couldn't see any signs of infection but said that it looked like I had some fluid in my tubes which she said could be caused by allergies and prscribed Flonase which I already took for a majority of my life (I suffered from sinuses and terrible allergies as a child and still do but not nearly as bad as before.) She also suggested that I take my Zyrtec daily which I had already been taking but not on a daily basis. I know it's only been six days but I've been doing everything that she's suggested and so far I'm seeing no results. The brain fog is gone as well as the ear pain which is good (It's only been gone for a day) but I would very much like to get my balance back to normal as this boat rocking feeling is starting to worry me a bit and become very troublesome as I often get nervous when crossing the street on the way to classes. Did I have a bout of Vertigo or something? I've heard unsteadiness can sometimes follow after having an attack. The physician also suggested trying the Epley Manuever which I haven't tried yet as I'd like to do it under the super vision of someone else or a doctor just in case I get dizzy again. Is there anything I can do to get my balance back on track? And also should I sleep with my head elevated? I'd really hate to feel like this for the rest of my life.

UPDATE: sorry to keep commenting but I'd like to keep you all updated. So far I'm feeling great! My balance is back on track, my energy is back and I no longer am experiencing any ear pain. A little dizziness if I tilt my head back but it last for a few seconds now and doesn't knock my balance off as much. I have a better time sleeping though I still sleep with my head elevated just to be on the safe side. I am a bit nervous about traveling this weekend I don't know if this even has an effect but I live in the mountains so when I travel back home, I always have issues with my ears popping from the high altitudes but so far I'm doing great! smile thanks for all of the help and support!

Good to know you are feeling better aubree. If it was an infection it can take time to go away, but it sounds like you will be clear of it soon. Best wishes. xx

I sleep with my head elevated as I find it easier to move and be aware when I wake. If you have to lift your head from the laying down perdition I find it awfull and made me sick or a passing out feeling.

    UPDATE:

Yesterday was awful. I traveled back home as the university made everyone leave for the break. I came back down on Tuesday . Yesterday (aside from finding out that it was that time of the month >:I so I felt absolutely terrible) I had a rough day yesterday. Aside from feeling like crap, the dizziness and uneasy swaying feeling came back. I was very distant from relatives and family and when I tried talking to my dad (I have to look up when I talk to him he's like 6,3 and I'm 5,6") when I leaned my head upward to talk to him, instantly everything in the room started spinning, my stomach flipped and a heavy wave of dizziness crowded my head. I honestly can't tell if it's because of the high altitudes from the mountains as I've started to notice a pattern. I usually feel fine on campus but whenever I travel to and/or from, two days later is when I experience symptoms. Like two weeks ago I went home and when I came back, two days later my ear started hurting again. This time I got dizzy again. It didn't last all day and it didn't knock my balance off either. Today I've felt jittery, a bit hyper and depressed. (Probably from my menstrual)

Hi aubree, sorry to hear you are suffering again. Well I'm not a doctor but I think it sounds plausible that travelling home is making things worse for you sad The change in air pressure at the different altitude is likely bringing your symptoms back on. You said you suffer from sinus problems too so maybe it's all connected.

I think perhaps you need to see if you can get an appointment with a specialist. We have ENT doctors in the UK (ear nose and throat), don't know what they are called in the US.

      Best wishes xx

I think that's what it is as well because it always happens two days after I get back, so I think it may be the trips back and forth from the mountains. I'm just learning the area. I'm not sure if we have an ENT in the area but we have a clinic down the street from the university that's luckily within walking distance. We also have a wellness station on campus. I only have two weeks before I leave again so I may just wait and schedule an appointment when I get back home

But I always have issues with my ears popping several times on the way up and down and my allergies and sinuses have been awful. When I did see the doctor about it in October she said that it could be a blockage due to sinuses as well.

Hiya, yeah maybe if you have a family doc back home that you could go see? Someone that knows you and your medical history. Like I said, I'm no doctor but definitley sounds like it all might be related (ears and sinuses).

I had about 3 weeks of dizziness and nausea recently due to meds I was on and that was long enough, so I feel for you.

      Mari xx

Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been a bit busy. (I don't remember the last time I updated, I think it was around Thanksgiving) but after the episode from Thanksgiving, I've been fine up until this week. I've started to experience random episodes of dizzines that only last like two seconds and then goes away. It doesn't mess with my balance or anyhing and  is not like the horrible room spinning dizziness that I experienced before that left me terribly shaken up, it's that mind numbing feeling like you can't think but you're obviously aware of you're surroundings and of what's going on type of dizzy. I experienced it yesterday, and Sunday and I have noticed that they: Only last a few seconds though yesterday I thought it was because I was dead tired and Monday I thought it was because I had started wearing my glasses to read again which makes my perception all weird and sometimes makes me dizzy when I have them on but I haven't worn them for a few days. I've also noticed that this seems to only happen when I'm sitting at my desk; I do have a tendency to lean terribly close to my laptop screen, not sure if that has anything to do with it. For about a week now, I've been experiencing an annoying ringing in my right ear. It's hard to explain but it sounds like someone ringing bells or sounding alarms in my right ear very faintly. Also, every now and then like every other day, I experience an annoying thump or pounding feeling and sound in both ears (not at the same time). No pain however so that's good. Also, I have no clue if this has anything to do with this but I'm just trying to throw in anything that could help, but I have been drinking a lot of caffine lately. I drank a cup of coffee last night at like 10:00 pm(I had no choice I had to finish an art project and rainy warm days drain me), a cup the morning before, a cup over the weekend, and a cup this morning and this was after not having had a cup for a month or so. Also, my diet has been somewhat poor. Yesterday and today were probably the only times that I actually ate three times in one day. I've been so caught up with my school work that I often skip meals and usually only eat once, sometimes twice a day (not including snacks) which I know is not healthy which is why I'm trying to get myself back into the habbit of going to the caf more often. ALSO, (last one I swear) I do use my beats headphones quite a lot. These are noise canceling headphones and can be quite loud, like a setting of one or two on volume is the equivalent to a pair of earbuds on full blast. I've been trying to keep the volume low but I think I just need to altogether just stop wearing them because I do think that they're making my ears worse or may be the main cause of all of this if that's even possible. I know over the weekend I recorded a vocal cover and had them up very loud so that I could hear different changes I was making while editing and I've also noticed that my ear drums have been pretty sensitive to sounds lately. Like watching videos in the auditorium yesterday during Psyc class seemed to bother my ears with the echo. I can't really explain it all that well but it basically felt like I was watching a video with poor audio and one part was at a lower volume and the other was louder but I could still hear both. Also we had a firedrill at 8:00 pm last night which scared the color off of me and killed my eardrums. I'm still sold on the headphones being the problem but I honestly  have no clue. Other than that I've been fine. No loss of balance, no weakness or anything like that.

ALSO! Sorry but I forgot to mention this, every now and then I experience this weird gross feeling like there's fluid rising in my ears and then goes back down. I'm not sure if that's the fluid that the doctor was talking about back from October's visit or not.
