Is this zoons balanitis?

Hello,

I've had this red patch around my urthra for quite some time now. I tends to get irritated quite easily and become inflamed. I had it looked at by a dermatologist, who said it was most likely zoon's balanitis. I'm not satisfied with this diagnosis, so have made an appointment with a urologist, it isn't for a while though.

My glans also get quiet dry at times and peel. I don't know if this is related or not bit figured I'd mention it. Does anyone have any experience with zoon's balanitis or any insight into what this may be? I'll include some images below. Thanks

Hi See the link I'm sending you, it may help but if it is ZB you can see as many as you like, but as your read its good treatment you need and not just keep seeing doctors.

    Hey Cargs889,

I have something similar to you. I made a post in the same section as you with photos. I would definitely like to know you have another diagnosis or any updates / fixes. I will also keep you updated on what my doctor tells me on the 24th

    Cheers

I don't see the Urologyst until early October (I live in an area where private specialists sometimes take a while to get into). I'm only 22 which is why I'm suspicious of the derms diagnosis. He did mention that washing the area with potassium permanganate crystals may help symptoms. You mix with water to make pale purple liquid. Haven't tried this yet but am going to.

      Hey Cargs

I found a post somewhere that mentioned if this is balanitis, using hand sanitizer might help. The reason is, if it is caused by some kind of fungus or bacteria, the alcohol content in the hand sanitizer will kill it. I've been trying that this week (I warn you, it burns!) but have not really noticed too much of a change at this time. Maybe something to try.

The issue with that is that soap tends to have a negative effect on that area. Mainly drying out of the skin.

For anyone with this kind of reaction, you should NEVER apply ANY chemical compound to the area until you know what exactly it is you are dealing with.  As, you quite literally risk a horrendous reaction.  Any skin that looks like this is basically telling you - ' I have had enough of this stuff, I need to return to my natural state '.  You do not achieve this by adding something you have NO idea what the reaction is going to be.

I have a form of Balanitis, mine is Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans [BXO / Lichen Sclerosus (LS)] - and what you have with conditions like this is often a severe dermatological reaction to what is going on in the body as a whole.  Autoimmune conditions are becoming more common, and simply stated, are a reaction to our modern way of life.

However, there are sever forms of Balanitis and the only way of confirming which it is YOU have is to have a biopsy test.  My LS was part caused by a combination of over-exposure to oil based skin ointments, skin lotion and Baby Oil used as Lube.

Until you know exactly what you are dealing with remove your penis from ALL exposure to chemicals, even soap.  Wash only with water, and ensure you are 100% dry every time you urinate, are sexually aroused, or after ejaculation.  Don't use any Lubes, condoms, Baby Oil, skin lotion or creams - the problem can even be exacerbated by a reaction to soap powders.  If you suspect you have this - once you have eliminated exposure to all other chemicals, and you still get an adverse reaction, swap to using liquid soap flakes, you get these from a supermarket and you can use it in a washing machine.

If it is proved you have a relatively simple skin reaction (BXO / LS is incurable!) / Balanitis going on, you can begin using things like lubes, lotions, moisturiser, condoms etc - do this one at a time, give each one a couple of weeks to see if you get the adverse reaction again, then, if you do you can avoid that in future.  NEVER simply do everything you used to do, all at once, otherwise, you will never be able to separate-out the things your penis cannot cope with.  Good Luck ......
