It could only happen to me !!

Hi fellow hippies, i am now 6 months post op. and feeling great, but i feel the need to share my little hospital mis hap with you all, no, it wasnt the op. that went fine, here goes, it was my second day and the stiffness and aching had kicked in but wasnt too bad, anyway, the physio was on me straight away, even before breakfast ! wanting me to get out of bed and walk on my new hip, anyway, managed it to the loo and the corridor, this continued on and off all day, kinder wishrd she would leave me alone to be honest !, later in the day i was asked if i had ' been ', when i said no i was presented with a little cup of syrupy stuff, and was told that it would set me straight for the next morning, WRONG !, about 10 or 11 pm i suddenly had the urge to go and it was quite urgent, so i struggled to get out of bed leaning on the frame and just made it in time, needless to say this went on all night and i was excausted, after about the forth trip a nurse asked me if i was alright, !,she got me something to take and by the early hours it eased up, but i was shattered, and of course in comes the physio wanting me to try the stairs !, i told her of my lack of sleep and my horrible night but it seemed to fall on deaf ears, anyway, my frame had dissapeared so i had to use the crutches, got as far as the top of the stairs and i came over really sweaty and the blood drained from my face, i said i think im going to faint, well, thats the last thing she wanted was me sinking to my knees and my hip popping out, so she called for help and i was taken back to my room in a wheelchair !, happily i didnt see her for the rest of the day and i managed a few hours sleep, at last, later i went home, but the physio appeared again just in time to help me into the car, so i couldnt be mad at her, so, the moral of this story is, if you dont need a laxative, then dont take it !, i laugh about it now, but at the time it wasnt so funny, thanks for reading, chris xx

    Your story made me laugh Christine, although I can imagine it was not funny at the time.  Your Physio sounds a rather brutal person to me.  Its a lesson to everyone reading this, say you've 'been' and then wait till you get home as long as you are only in for a few days, and then take a laxative if needed.  Prune juice is also good and is a natural help.  The laxatives they give you in hospital are much stronger than what you can buy in the chemist so be warned!

      Yes, your right, i didnt really feel the need for anything at that stage, but i was being a ' good ' patient, in hinesight i should have spoken up, i might have had a decent nights sleep, xx

    At the Croborough Horder Centre they luckely only persisted on 'number ones' and left the twoo's to me to decide. But I have to say they don't let any grass grow over the  whole process (which was a very possitive one).

    Dear Christine, I loved your story and got a big laugh out of that. I worked in the hospital and never knew of some physio handing out this laxative syrup, so makes me wonder how many other patients she tortured over her career. One case for the psychiatric journals. I guess what we can learn from your dreadful experience, that when put in some situation like that where we are totally spent and asked to something we do not wish to do, we can no, asked about bowels, they are fine, thank you.

      Hi Susan, sorry i didnt explain that proberly, it wasnt the physio that gave me the laxitive, in fact i dont really know who it was, she wasnt in a nursing uniform so i presumed it was the ward manager or perhaps someone from the pharmacy, it was proberbly a routine thing for all patients, in hindsight i should have asked who she was, DOH !

    It does sound questionable and concerning who this person was! She probably has never had surgery before. Hopefully, her routine has been deleted by other patient complaints. Beware of strangers caring syrups would be good advice, ha. Glad you made it out alive. And can look back so happy you are doing so well, I am 6 days out of surgery now.enjoy your day, j

    Hi

    I've had 2 THR's but this was previous to that.....I was taken into hospital when a stationary car suddenly started as I was going behind it {in a little quiet road} knocked me down, reveresed over my ankle then droveover it and away.

    Never mind......the story is my ankle was well smashed and one of the first times they came round with the drug trolley....they handed out meds and I wanted to know what each one was {typical of me LOL} then she came to the laxatives and I took it once....she came round again, I said Skip the laxitive please......I cant....you are written up for it.... Me: .I'll let you know if I need it....and I dont.....Her:You have to have it......not taking it {lol} I'm standing here o=until you do. I'll keep it under my tongue until you go away again lol....anyway after this childish arguement she gave up.

    There was another lady in the room....she was old, and couldnt move.....they had to use a hoist to move her. Everymorning she woke up and was lying in a dirty bed.....she was so upset and they had to come and change it each morning. I said to her......dont take the laxative.....Oh I have to...they are nurses.!!!!! {little gods}

    I said to the nurse when she came round about not giveiong them to her so often

    The same arguement started that I had had about me.

    Poor woman....I dont know how long she was there. Just know how embarrassed she was each morning but wouldnt say anything

    Love

    LOL great story Christine! The nurse waved that stuff at me but I was adamant I'd not touch it until I could get to the loo, on my own!
