It feels like I'm dying in my sleep

For about 4 months not I get this sensation usually just as I'm about to fall asleep. It feels like a rush of warm electricity going to my brain and it comes over me like a wave and I can't move. I feel it happen and I say to myself to wake up and wake up but I never can. When I finally can pull myself out of this state I wake up shaking and tingling all over and feeling like I'm suffocating. Has anybody ever experienced this before? It's truly terrifying and any family member I tell just calls it "nightmares" but that's surely not what this is. Help please!!

Hi, Erin! This is a very common experience. I know it's incredibly scary, but lots of people have it. It's called night terrors or sleep paralysis. It's not just a nightmare, you are right. The experience of not being able to move is caused by certain sleep hormones that we all have while we're asleep, it's just that you are half awake and aware of it. Night terrors and sleep paralysis are not at all unusual, and while they are frightening they are nothing to worry about. It might help to discuss this with your doctor, but I would be very wary about taking any medication for it. Please be assured that you are not at all unusual in experiencing this.

No worries, Eryn! Hopefully in time it will stop, or at least become much less frequent. You certainly won't die, and you are NOT going crazy! Good luck.

If you die in your sleep you will not know about it, you are dead.
I have problems like this and all it consists of is a snooze. The older we get the more we snooze, it is very embarrasing when in company and you head nodds and off you go. Nothing to worry about
Generally I would not call it nightmares, just nodding off I have been known to fall asleep when on the internet. or watching the TV or talking to company. I am a real problem and it is taken as a joke. Yes I am a Pensioner although when younger I used to do it in meetings or lessons.
Not worth worrying about, can be cute, or funny depending on the situation around you.
Pax generally jumps on my Knee and Licks my face if I nodd of
Stop worrying

What possible relevance does this have to Eryn's problem? She is not talking about dropping off to sleep in front of the TV, nor anything remotely like that. Why don't you read her post properly?

I would not call this night terrors or anything serious many people have this problem and sometimes it can be caused by lack of sleep during the day.
Sometimes medications can cause this problem with the actual dscriptions she has mentioned
She does not seem to suffer sleep paralisis, so I would recommend it is a nap with associated awaking sensations.
We are not here to diagnose, personally I am not a GP so in these instances we cannot prescribe or give diagnosis as sleep problems are an exremely complicated area of Science, hence Sleep Clinics.
Also remember we do not see the person on the other side of the internet. I would advise you also read the post yourselve and do not assume you can diagnose a condition where Specialists and GPs may need to diagnose a patients problem,
We are not taking people on here as patients, if you think you are work in a hospital

Nightmares are quite common if yu have something on your mind, you can try Breathing technique, that may help you. Do you have any reason why you are getting this sensation
To be honest I would prefer to die in my sleep one min I am sleeping then gone, sounds the best way to go as far as I am concerned.
You have had this complaint fr quite a time now so I would suggest you talK to your GP
