Hello have posted on here a couple of days ago about waiting for results on my ct scan which I had on Thursday morning and was told about a week for results , but rang my doctors on Friday morning because I wanted to ask them about the best pain killers to take while waiting for results because I was having stinging pains which were coming and going but still needing to urinate a lot , but was told my ct scan was back and yes it's a kidney stone that near my kidney and bladder join but she said the symptons that I was having on Friday sounds like it may have moved to my bladder now , but since then no more mov men on same symptons as needing to pass urine al the time 😡 What I want to know from anyone on here that been through this can trying to pass the stone go on like this for a long time stopping and starting again 🤔 Having to put up with these symptoms all the time ?? .

I apologize I recently joined and missed your post. So not sure of your history. I will post my history later. But to answer your question the longest it has taken me to pass a stone is 5 days. The stone would move then stop. When mine are "on the move" I have visible blood in my urine. Sometimes painful sometimes not. Since Jan 1st of this year I have had to go to the ER 9 times just for the pain. Are they giving you anything for the intense pain? Here is what bothers me. Why in the heck are they making you wait a week for CT results?!!! I've had to have 5 and each time I found out within an hour or so. I'm going to count my blessings for my doctor's. I can't imagine, my thoughts and prayers are with you

I have had stones move (seemed like they werer doing somersaults!), but have never fully passed one, so yes it can go completely quiet for a while and then the pain can return... only way to know for sure it is gone is if you see it!

I had one stick in a similar place and needed Ureterscopic surgery to finally remove it.

Hi I haven't posted for a while in the forums

Due to surgery etc, I have cystinuria basically I make cystine stones all the time and faster than a normal stone patient I was diagnosed 5 years ago and your pain does sound like your stone is on the move, but the pain is caused by infections as the stone releases bacteria as it moves I've become somewhat of an expert these days knowing when I have stones and what they are doing fortunately for me mine are not passable therefore surgery is the only route I still have stones in my upper right pole that the surgeons can't get to and my next appointment is in six months so I constantly live with the pain and paracetamol is the only painkiller they recommend I take when I have an infection my GP puts me on antibiotics and records it with the specialist.

Most stones don't result in infections, this is not typical Nephrolithiasis, easy enough to have it checked by a urine sample - using a dipstick first (by GP) or even cultured at the Lab.

I have had pain of all sorts due to stones for seeral years... never once had an infection with it though (had one years ago before I got stones so I do know the difference!) - including now where I have stones in both sides! Symptoms of infection are fever, or at least higher temperature and difficulty passing urine, sometimes with pain in the abdomen, but it is different to the classic stone pain - renal colic, odds on you will recognise that type of pain by now!

Paracetomol is all but useless for colic, (and it hammers liver function of you take them longer term) you need an NSAID (eg. Naproxen) they often reccommend Dicolfenac, but this is hard on the heart and believe me, works no better than the others!) and possibly you might even need Opiates if it gets really bad - and believe me it CAN get really bad! Have a search for "NICE guidelines on managing Renal Colic" for the official management guidlines.

You will need kidney function blood tests too.

The bad news is kidney stones mean an increased risk of kidney failure, hence the reason to get rid of them if necessary. (Unfortunately I cannot lie in a suitable position for ESW Lithotripsy due to chronic pain and disablity, so mine will only get treated if they become life threatening and block up again!)

You should now be refered to a Urologist, he will then decide what should be done... depending on where it is, size and other factors.. that usually means either - leave it, and wait; or Lithotripsy (not a joy and not very effective because it sometimes needs several attempts and means a lot of pain and bleeding - think assualt with a baseball bat!) or if the stone is in certain positons, Ureteroscopic surgery to zap it with a laser directly.

Sadly you will be at increased risk of getting them back again... despite drinking 3 L of water daily, mine returned in 2 years, and I am not unusual for that!

I have found Tamsulosin helps with the colic pain you get in the meantime, and it CAN help pass a stone, most GPs forget this exists, so remember to mention it!

      Drink plenty of water!

You mentioned blood in urine, so they may do  Cystoscopy first to check that out first -  I have had a couple as I tend to get blood in urine when my stones start to shift too... no joy, but the good news is, it is a little easier for women :-(

Now you will get used to being dealt with like cattle... Urology departments are very hectic and busy; everything seems to get taken for granted!
