It's all new to me!

I've just been diagnosed with Coeliacs disease and am finding it very stressful shopping so far. I am following the weight watchers diet as well but all the GF breads seem high in calories. Also I've had headaches for the last couple of days and feel like I'm in a world of my own. Could these be coz Ive stopped all wheat or just coz I'm stressed. I've joined loads of groups online and have all the info but it seems like information overload. Any tips or advice appreciated. Thanks in a advance

    Hi Carent

I have just been diagnosed too and there is a lot to learn isn't there?  I am vegetarian and have spent years looking at lables so a bit of a head start.  I have been diagnosed by blood test and am waiting for the endoscope (8 week wait!) I was told to continue normal diet till that is done but it goes agains the grain - no pun intended - so have half shifted to gluten free.  I would think your headaches are more from stress as going gluten free should surely make you feel a lot better, but what do I know.  Try and do some relaxation techniques or get yourself a massage or anything to destress.  Let me know how you get on and good luck

Hi Chrissie,  it is absolutely crucial that you continue eating wheat/gluten right up till your endoscopy.  If you don't, it's possible that your gut will start to heal just enough so that your biopsy results will look normal.  In that case you may not get diagnosed properly and you may then continue to eat gluten to the detriment of your long-term health. You really need to be sure whether you have CD or not.  If you don't have CD .....you can avoid the stress of trying to eat GF.   If you do have CD.....you absolutely must avoid ALL gluten, forever.

Why worry about calories? I have definitely lost mass since being GF but not weight (presumably because muscle weighs more than fat).

I think it's possible that you will eat less now that your body can absorb nutrients properly.

I was diagnosed by bloc test also and had the endoscopy at the beginning of the week. There is so much to learn but feel better today as I've been out for lunch and they were very helpful in helping me choose wisely. I'm worried about putting on weight as it's taken me 5 months to lose 2 stone and don't want to undo the hard work. People say that I will prob lose it easier now I'm going GF diet but knowing my luck that won't happen haha. I took my fiends advice and have been on supermarket website and ordered GF stuff and am having it delivered coz yesterday's shopping trip was a nightmare...hence the headache I reckon. Next step to try and order a take away, I love Chinese and haven't a clue what to order!!! Good luck with ur endoscopy and hope u get an appointment soon. X

Hi Carent, the tip to avoid putting on weight is to get into a low-carb eating habit.  If you fall into the trap of replacing all the normal high-carb foods like pasta/bread/crackers/biscuits/cakes with a GF version, you'll be no better off health-wise or weight-wise.  My advice would be to follow a grain-free/paleo style of eating plan.  I always refer people who aren't familiar with Paleo principles to start by looking at a website called "Marks Daily Apple" by Mark Sisson.  Lots of great info about why we are better off to eliminate all grains from our diet.  It doesn't have to be a total 100% committment - you can choose what level you want to live with.  Good Luck.

Remember we need carbs for our muscles, brain, heart and nervous system to function correctly.  45%-60% of our energy intake should come from carbs.  No good being slim if it brings on ill health x

I'm my case i suffer with a bad back as well so carrying too much weight affects that. I don't starve myself I eat healthy and whilst some peiple are very ill before being diagnosed with coeliac I wasn't. I on my suffered from bloated stomach. I know if I put the 2 stone back on then I would feel worse than what I do now. I feel a lot happier today about Coeliacs as I have been out for two healthy meals and the restaurants know exactly what to do in the food preparation as it's a lot more common than I thought. 😀😀

I eat a lot of jacket potato, rice and pasta so I do have a well balanced diet.

Hi, CHrissie, 45 - 60% of our energy intake should come from carbs?

I have been on a Gluten free, wheat free, oat free and barley free diet for almost 3 years and I have gained 3 stones within 2 years after starting the diet and that all thank to the carbohydrates which I actualy eat in moderation and my energy levels are as low as on the begining of that diet. The weight gain might have contributed by 10%, of course.

My dietican advised me not to cut of carbohydrates for the same reason as you mentioned, but I will give it a try and stay away from carbs.

I am sure that when I serve myself a fish and vegetables and a meat and vegetables and also diary I will not just loose weight but also feel more energetic.Plus swiming. I cannot do to much of any other excersice. I have Oestopenia. You are right saying No good being slim if it brings on ill health. In my case I was sice 12 and 5 foot 3, so not extremely slim before diet but now with all the corn and potatoes as a side dish on my plate or pasta this or pasta that and mini pizza twice a year only still makes me 3 stones heavier since that Gluten free wheat free, barley free, oat free diet which makes me very sluggish, fatique, and no energy at all. I take vitamines as well and go outdoors with my almost 4 years old daughter every day. I NEED 10 TIMES MORE ENERGY TO KEEP UP WIYH HER, as she is the most energetic child of the world.(Speaking as a former profesional chilcarer, I have plenty children to compare her to).

You also get carbs from most fruit and veg, you don't need to have loads of processed grains, as in pasta and bread etc as well.

I have just read an american book called 'grain brain' which suggests we would all be better not eating any grains, and the benefits of carbs have been vastly over estimated recently, causing obesity and diabetes epidemics (sugar is also a carb), and alzheimers. Although this may be extreme, from experience it is easier to cut down on boring carbs and get most of your energy from the tastier foods, e.g. meat and cheese, butter, olive oil, whilst also practicing good portion control on these high fat but delicious foods, and eating plenty of multicoloured fruit and veg, with much smaller portions of pasta etc.

It's the protein and fat content which makes you feel full, so you don't eat any more. The carbs just make your blood sugar go up and then down and then you are tired and often hungry again shortly after.....

Sure you need carbs - but not in vast quantities.

If your WW leader had anything about her she should be able to help you with a gluten free WW diet, but mainly you have to help yourself.  The advice you've been given so far is sound ........ get your carbs from potato, rice and beans - not bread etc.which as you've sussed out are very calorific (and a waste of money on my opinion as they tast like cardboard).

Could the headaches be de-tox headaches?  You'll be  cutting down on ready made foods and I understand people on a de-tox diet get headaches and bone pains  ...... just a thought.

Later you may find you become sensitive to lactose as well - but its just temporary and you'll be able to reintroduce it in a few weeks.

Thanks for that. I have been looking around websites and found some good GF products that are low in fat. So as long as I can still have my crisps I'm fine haha. My pallette just has to get used to the taste of the rice pasta, although I think I cooked it wrong because it was like eating chewy worms!! Anyway had loads of tips on how to perfect it so fingers crossed I can perfect it soon.  I have noticed on sites that people are lactose intolerant as well and I was quite relieved that I'm not as I love my yogurts, milk and cheese, but nobody had mentioned that I may become temp sensitive to it so thank you for that. I have my first appointment with the dietician on 9th July so maybe she will tell me things like this. I have a few questions written down that I want to ask her so will pop that on the list.   I'm always worn out these days too but I think it's coz my brain is taking in so much new information and I'm having to concentrate when out shopping now. I will get there soon I'm sure. Thanks again
