It's been over a month, possibly anaemia, what should I do?

Hi all,
It all started roughly a month and a half ago - dizziness, extremely tired, lack of motivation, lack of emotion, mood swings, headaches, feeling drained, very pale complexion... - so I finally went to the doctors and he assumed iron defiency anaemia. He gave me a form to then get my blood test that same day. Went there and the results that came back were glucose = fine, folate(?) = low, vitamin b12 = low. Nothing about iron, but then I had no idea what they were going on about. Because of my results, I was advised to go and get another blood test the following week, so I did (2 days ago). I got the results today and apparently everything is fine! But I'm still feeling the same, I didn't eat properly due to loss of appetite but then it became so serious that I didn't eat anything for 4 days straight (bad, I know). All the symptons are still here and I'm not eating as well as I should (maybe a slice of bread every day, nothing more as I feel incredibly sick after eating), and so I'm currently living off of Lucozade Orange and it seems to be giving me a bit more energy to go and ride my pony etc. I have trouble falling asleep but I also have trouble staying awake during the day. It's all a bit muddled, so I apologise. But it's getting out of hand. I want to know what's wrong with me, I struggle to do anything at the moment and it will affect me in the long run I can just see it! I need some answers/advice. Has anyone experienced these symptons? If so, what was it and how was it dealt with? Does anyone know what's wrong with me? How can I sort this? Thanks in advance, Ri.

These sound very much like the symptoms of iron deficiency but firstly you need to know what your iron measures were, so ask for a copy of your results and do your research. For years I was suffering with these symtoms plus hair loss and thinning but I wasn't until I saw a private hair specialist where she said its likely iron to be the problem. I had many iron tests before but was never tested for my serum ferritin, which is the iron stores (reserves.) our system here is pretty funked up as my reading was very much on te lower scale but still within what is classes as normal! For years my reading was rock bottom but still normal but the hair specialist said it's needs to be 80 at least for normal hair growth, mine was 15. So although mine was normal i was still suffering with anaemia symptoms but couldn't be diagnosed. After 4 months of supplements I feel loads better, so get a copy I your results. Also please fuel your body even though it's hard, not eating will just make it a whole lot worse!!!
Best of luck xx

The doctors didn't give me any information of what was what, and didn't do a very good job explaining anything and giving me further advice. So do I just go down to the doctors and ask for a copy of both my blood tests or what? I wouldn't say I've got hair loss but I have noticed a very large amount of it just falling out. I've still got plenty left so wasn't too worried (very thick hair, you see hehe). So do they just pass it even if you're low on iron? Seems a bit wrong, surely they would want to help you push it up a bit more? I have been eating a lot better than before, and I know it's stupid to allow myself to get like this. I have eaten a bit more than usual today, and it is slowly getting easier to eat although the whole "loss of appetite" and feeling sick/bloated afterwards is still present. xx

Say your unhappy as the symtoms are still present and ask for them to run through your results with you. Also one thing I've learnt is see the same doctor every time! Ask if your serum ferritin levels have been tested also and if any are on the lower side then ask and be firm. Like I said my serum ferritin was 15 when the brackets of measurements were between 12-400 and something! So I was rock bottom and felt rubbish but seeing the same doctor and backed up with a little knowledge from the hair specialist (result of 80 or more for normal hair growth) I felt abit more confident! She then questioned my information and spoke to a dermatologist who confirmed it was low! Hair shedding is how the thinning all starts so mention that also.
Best of luck xx
