It's ME Teeth!

Hi everyone

As we were chatting about teeth earlier on the spectacles thread I thought I would start one specifically about ME and teeth.

I think I have mentioned this before, but when I saw my dentist a while ago and told him that I had been diagnosed with ME he informed me that if ever I needed to have a local anaesthetic injection he would give me one which doesn't contain adrenaline ....... because anything with adrenaline is a complete no no for ME sufferers.

One of the theories about the cause of ME as some of us know, is that for some reason we are unable to 'switch' off adrenaline as a 'normal' person would and as a result we just drain all our energy, and the only way to regain it is by resting. I am convinced that there has to be an awful lot of truth in this theory.

Several months before I was diagnosed with ME I had extensive reconstructive work done on my upper teeth (my generation didn't have fluouride toothpaste and many of us subsequently have soft teeth), and I often wonder if the dozen or so adrenaline injections triggered something. Also, I had a lot of amalgam fillings removed, and I wonder if the lead from these was released into my system during the drilling.

Who knows - but hopefully one day we will find out what causes this wretched illness :?

Just hope that it is in my lifetime

So folks ..... no injections which contain adrenaline.

    Hi Katie,

It was me you said it to.

I had to have an extraction so i opted for the IV, it totally knocked me out for about a week

I have to go back at some point to have quite a bit of work done on my top front teeth so will say it to them about my condition, whether it will be a local or full KO.

    Good luck James!

    Still love the Speedos

I wonder whose idea that was

Oh Katie, I was SOOOO interested reading this about teeth.

Like you, I am of the generation with soft teeth so seem to always have to have work done and like most of the population I don't particulary enjoy it.

Last year my dentist took 2 appointments and approx 12 injections just to attempt to remove one tooth and each time he had to abandon it because I was screaming in pain and each time all the injections wore off within approx 30 minutes. I even phoned the surgery after the first attempt to ask if perhaps they had a duff batch of stuff because the effects had worn off so quickly (of course they thought I was start raving bonkers).

Anyway, eventually he referred me to the hospital for a GA and while I was peacefully asleep I had 6 of the little blighters taken out but the anaesthetic zonked me out for days afterwards.

A couple of weeks ago I had to have yet another filling and once again even after 5 injections the darn thing still wasn't numb and he had to abandon drilling.

PLUS every time I go to the dentist my hubby has to take me because if I have an injection I am left shaking from head to foot so I am not fit to attempt driving, I have mentioned the shakes to the dentist but they just smile sweetly (mad woman again).

Sorry to ramble on but it has been really worrying me why suddenly dental work is not only unpleasant but blooming well painful now and it is such a relief to think that there might just be an underlying cause.

I haven't been able to see my GP yet but I am adding this to my list of all my aliments so that hopefully I won't chicken out of being strong and asking for some sort of referral .... I hate confronting authority figures.

    Kindest regards to you all

    Kristal

I am so pleased I found this site, it has actually restored a bit of my sanity

    Hi there Kristal

Gosh poor you ...... but I was really interested to read your posting.

So that says it all really - dental procedures really do affect those with ME unless certain precautions are taken sad

What a pain .... literally sad

I am just lucky to have one of the smashingist dentists around ..... thanks Hywel Evans of Cavendish Square

These youngsters don't realise just how lucky they are to have strong teeth. I can remember the only toothpaste available for children in the 50s was called 'Punch and Judy' and was in a little tin ..... it was later found to contain sugar to make it taste nice

I was hoping to have my bottom teeth reconstructed as well, as the top are now so beautiful, but I wouldn't dare ..... they're not too bad anyway

And there's no way I could spend four hours in the chair like I did last time :?

Sorry you had such a rough time Kristal sad

    Take care

    Katie x :D

I am fortunate in that the only good thing my father and grandmother ever gave me was the genes for exceptionally good and strong teeth. I have had no work done, apart from a scale and polish, for the last 27 years and I have never had an injection. When I was a child a filling was done without and an extraction was done under gas - pouah.

All that is happening to my teeth as I get older is that they are moving forward and getting a bit crowded and overlapped. I have 4 and a half fillings from my childhood that might need replacing one day but are ok so far. :D

You are so lucky Alicia .... I have spent an absolute fortune on mine ... apart from all the misery it has entailed.

But then as we were post rationing babies we were indulged with sweeties

Well I am sure mine is genetic because my mother used to put golden syrup in my dummy to make me suck it because I kept spitting it out. I always had a sweetie tin on the go as well and never cleaned my teeth properly when I was young.

Yes, I sure genetics has a lot to do with it.

We used to 'clean' our teeth by chomping on an apple before we went to bed

Does anyone remember those cough sweets that were like a brown sugar cube - my Ma used to put one of those under my pillow enery night and I always ate it whatever

Were those sweets called Army & Navy squares or paragoric (prob wrong spelling there), I seem to remember those and I loved them.

I also remember the Punch & Judy tooth powder and of course the delicious Rose Hip Syrup that I was given every day as a child.

No wonder then really that I have tooth problems now.

    Cheers

I had Cod Liver Oil and Malt - pouah :hangover:

Can't remember what the cough cubes were called, but I remeember the rose hip syryp, and the orange juice in the little square bottle, and yes Alicia, I remember the spoonful of malt every week .....

.... and Virol, and the school nit nurse, and farthings, and blackjacks and fruit salad sweets (four for an old penny) and shebert lemon in a little paper bag from Woolies that burnt your tongue!!

Oh and the dreaded yearly visit from the School Dentist .... and it was always me that got a note for mum to say that I needed a filling:shock:

    I wonder why

    Katie smile

PS. My daughter was practically born with toothbrush in her hand!

Virol ??? ....... Oh no, you have just resurrected one of my childhood nightmares.

Yuk, yuk, yuk, I can still vividly see that spoonful of disgusting brown gunge looming towards me accompanied by threats from my mother of what would happen to me if I didn't swallow it....... I feel traumatised now

Now Fruit Salad, there is an entirely different story, yum.

We used to have to line up at school and present our hands for inspection and anyone who had sherbert dyed yellow fingers was in deep trouble

What was Virol, it sounds like a laxative? :yuk:

Those were the days, eh girls?

I think it was some sort of concentrated malt extract although goodness knows what it was supposed to be good for.

Probably was a laxative for all I know, it certainly made me clench my buttocks when I saw the stuff  ... oops sorry !
