Hello, my husband has decreased kidney function.

He was dehydrated twice which caused the kidney GFR to drop to 23. With a proper Intake of protein and sodium he raised it back to 45.

He experienced some itching on both ankles but used an anti-itch cream and it seems to be OK now. I do see he gets more fatigued than he used to but he is 78 years old and that might have something to do with it. So far he has not experienced any swelling at all however I have read if you have swelling you should see your care provider. Fatigue is typical with GFR diagnosis. If you are swelling perhaps you should watch your sodium and keep it below 2000 according to your weight. is it possible for you to make an appointment to see your doctor just to ease your mind. Good luck

    Hi yehyeh,

If your question is whether itchiness, swelling and fatigue are symptoms of low / decreasing kidney function (low GFR), the answer is an unqualified "yes", I am sorry to say - all 3 symptoms are indicative of low kidney function.  However, they could also be completely unrelated - the itchiness could be a rash, the swelling could be because you are taking in too much salt, and the fatigue... well, that could be anything.  My advice is to get to a doctor and simply have a blood test.  The results will tell you immediately whether there is an issue with your kidneys; it will show up as an elevated creatinine level.

If this is in fact due to poor kidney function (and that's a big "if"), I will note that the onset of all 3 symptoms simultaneously would likely indicate a highly decreased state eg. kidney function at approx. 25% or less.  I would not delay in getting that blood test.

Finally, if the blood test reveals poor kidney function, remember:  this does not necessarily mean you have a chronic problem and that your kidneys are doomed to fail (as mine, sadly, are) - there are many things that can impact your kidney function and it is possible this could be largely reversed / permanently stabilized.  Again, these are all "ifs", so you just need to get the test.  Good luck, and I wish you a positive result!
