IUD info

Hi there. I got and Marina IUD inserted on February 13th due to heavy long lasting periods. It stopped the period I was on, but only for two weeks. I am on day 5 of a crippling Period. Doctor says it takes some time for your body to adjust to having the IUD. But I bled for 36 days before I got this I don't think I can handle it lasting much longer. Has anyone else had this happen?

Hi, I had mirena many years ago to control bleeding due to medication I was on. I wasn't in peri then. Yes, it took a while, months for it to reduce and at the end it stopped periods all together. It wss great. After my medication changed I thought I don't need it anymore and got it taken out. Then my periods started again. To cut the long story short I had minerana fitted in again 2015. This time I thought I am starting perimenapause and didn't want to deal with hectic bleeding and thought it might also regulate my mood changes. . We are in 2018 and I am still bleeding. It didn't stop the periods a together this time. But at least I am not bleeding much. Perhaps if I didn't have mirena it would have been much worse. So I suggest be patient. Give it a few months. It should get much lighter. Take care

Also, just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear you bleeding for 36 days! ! It must have been just awful . I don't think it would be the case with mirena in place. Fingers crossed.

Thank you. When I did get it inserted on February 13th, it did stop my 36 day period right away. But two weeks later here I am on day 5 of super-heavy bleeding and passing lots of clots just like I was before the IUD. I'm trying to be patient but I feel so drained from it all and I wonder if it's ever going to stop.

Dear Michelle, perhaps if it is still the same volume of blood coming after a week contact your gp or whoever fitted it and ask for an advise. Every body is different after all. It might be good to get professional advise to keep your mind at rest. I sometimes find it even better to be reassured by 2 different professionals. GPs can even vary in the way give medical advise. Don't worry. Take it easy. Everything will get better.

I had my Mirena fitted last Nov for the same reason as you, non stop heavy periods. My first period after the fitting lasted 32 days just very light, mostly spotting since then its been around 3 days light spotting but getting longer and longer in between. I still get cramps which is common for around 6 months on the Mirena (nothing that an ibruprofen can't sort.

my understanding is that the Mirena coil stops the build up of the uterine lining but In order for the build up too be prevented the body must shed what is already there.

good luck with yours I know it has made a difference to me

Yes I had exactly this problem, and when bleed finally stopped I was still in bad pain. Went to the dr who instantly insisted on taking it out and on the top of it was a big lump of foul smelling and bloody mucus. The coil had not been fitted properly by gynaecologist and had got infected so I am not a fan of this coil which seems to be being pushed by gynaes all over the world. WHY? Its not very good for alot of women, and if not put in right you could still get pregnant if menstruating even sometimes, or like me get a nasty infection needing 6 weeks of treatment to get rid of it. Be wary. XXX
