Since this past May 2017 I started having severe insomnia where I would get like 12hrs a week, then gradually it was 5-6hrs a week and the total insomnia set in. My doctor gave me lunesta, but it doesn't work. I've tried everything I can and cannot sleep. Any suggestions? I'm not depressed or anxious. It just happened suddenly.

Are you a female around menopause? If not look for allergy or asthma culprit. Insomnia during high pollen season in my case is related to strange allergies. Have you tried Benadryl? I know it is not the best thing but may help.  Also you may try 1000  mg calcium before bed, the best form is calcium gummies. Take magnesium during the day.  Also, you may try Valerian root in the morning, it calms the nervous system and prepares for a good night sleep. Cut out all OTC drugs if possible, many seemingly harmless OTC drugs have insomnia as side effect.  Cut out all energy drinks, coffee, stimulants. Good luck.

I'm a 46 yr old female. Don't think I'm menopausal. It started after taking Cipro and flagyl for colitis. I don't take over the counter meds or prescribed meds anymore. I did try benadryl and it keeps me awake as well. The hospital gave me benzos thru IV this past Sunday and it just seemed to intensify the effects of sleep deprivation.

I have not tried the calcium and magnesium thing, I will definitely give it a whirl!! I live in Texas where it's always allergy season, been here nearly my whole life and I've never had allergies. The only thing new I started doing was using Black sea salt, activated charcoal couldn't breathe culprit, could it?? Thanks for the well wishes and input!! 😃

Have you ever tried sunbathing? My husband suffers from mild insomnia and for some reason, just lying in the sun for a few hours helps him sleep better at night. Something to do with our internal clock I guess, but he tries to avoid sleeping pills as much as possible due to prior addictions. We even replaced our mattress and sheets with bamboo instead of cotton for even more comfort when we sleep.

Well flagyl and cipro can cause that. You may even sleep, but your sleep is different and you do not remember dreams. This will go away after your brain recovers. Read about nasty side effects of both meds. Fluoroquinolone antibiotics increase anxiety, same for metronidazole. Tough it through, or try some other benzos or Trazodone- a very slight piece of a tablet. But this only in emergencies, otherwise let your brain recover. your body will find a way to sleep. BTW you are approaching perimenopause already.

Also, I forgot!  Very important! Increase your probiotic intake, yogurts, probiotic pills etc. Both antibiotics wipe out the flora in your gut, and this might be the reason for the psychiatric symptoms. Valerian root works just as well as benzos, in a dose of at least 500 mg, but is a bit harsh on the stomach. Remember, your brain will recover.
