Ive been on Sertralines for 5 weeks and not sleeping

I have been on 50mg for 5 weeks and am still not sleeping. Some nights I am awake all night. My dr prescribed some sleeping tablets for a couple of weeks and I slept. (10 days) then I had phenergen for 10 days also good. I have had a few Valium which help. But is it worth persevering? I really am needing to sleep naturally as it's distressing when you used to sleep ok. I went through the anxiety stage and I think I'm through the night sweats. I actually feel better apart from the lack of sleep. I was on Sertralines 5 years ago, I don't remember struggling so much with sleep last time. .. I have been anxious going onto them which doesn't help really. Any thoughts? Shall I keep going ?

Hi, sorry to hear you've been having a rough time, yes, you absolutely should carry on.I've been on Sertraline for 10 weeks, although I switched from Citalopram (long story!), my GP prescribed Zopiclone for 1st 4 weeks to help sleep, which it did, but it's been a long road as the 1st GP I saw was very hesitant about dose increases so I've only just got up to 100mg. I now don't need the Zopiclone as my anxiety has improved by night time (it's been horrendous in the day so I have Lorazepam).I am finally starting to see light at the end of a very long, dark tunnel. Give the Sertraline more time (up to 8 weeks) and your sleep should improve, also think about when you take your tablet.I took mine in the morning initially but was so dizzy in the day I switched to night time (I know some warn of bad dreams but I didn't have them).I now take 50mg in am and 50mg at night. Try to relax in the evening and stay off social media, that helps a lot. Good luck, sleep deprivation sucks, I have 3 daughters and my 4 year old wakes me up every night at 2am! x x

Hi Sandy, sorry to hear you're having trouble sleeping. I'm also on 50 mg per day. I take it first thing in the morning, between 5.30am - 6. I have had no side effects really, except the no appetite and being a little emotionless. It's now well over 9 or 10 days, doing great. My anxiety and panic attacks were killing my life and me..... i had no life... but zoloft saved me, pretty much as soon as i went on it.

I hope your sleep improves. Maybe the valium is good, but dont take them every night. Try and relax and go to bed same time.... i wish you all the best. Hope the side effects wear off and you get your normal sleep back. X

Try taking meds very early in morning. I don't sleep well either, and take a light sedative Ativan, to sleep. Best of luck
