Ive been perscribed Levothroxine but theres nothing wrong with me

Hi I've been prescribed 50mcg of levothyroxine for a recently diagnosed under active thyroid.

I am a little bit surprised by this because there doesn't appear to be anything wrong with me.

Blood tests revealed a TSH of 7, Free Thyroxine of 16 & Thyroid Peroxidase antibody of 342

I feel completely fine and when my doctor asked me if I am suffering from any of the symptoms usually associated with hypothyroidism I felt confident in saying No to all of them.

Off course I feel tired every now and then and yes I could say I do get depressed (very rarely but for good reason like having no job!) but i'm fit and healthy. I exercise 3 times a week, I'm at my ideal weight, I'm not suffering hair loss and feel full of energy. I'm a 46 year old male.

I worried that if I start taking this medicine then I might unsettle my body and then start developing these symptoms?

Anyone else suffered a similar dilemma?

Any feedback will be appreciated?

What happens if I don't take this medicine?

Thanks

You really do need to take these meds. I initially went to docs feeling v. Tired and losing hair but no other symptoms. My results did show that I had an under active thyroid HOWEVER the registra I saw that day for my blood results said iron levels fine etc there was nothing medically wrong. He had failed to scroll down to the full results which meant I was sent away to get on with it and was not put on thyroxine. Within 8 months I had ballooned in size, despite eating very little and exercising loads, couldn't sleep despite being exhausted and confusion set it pretty quickly to the point where I couldn't even remember my own phone number. . A blood test showed that there was now no activity at all in my thyroid , I was so ill I couldn't even lift a hairbrush to brush my hair. It took two months off work to recover. Taking your tablets will not bring yr symptoms on, it will prevent yr condition-ans so your side effects- from worsening

Hi metso, take the thyroxine. Your gp would not have prescribed it unless he/she thought you needed it.

I have taken it for over 30 years and have a friend who is now entering her 40th year. my husband started on it a few years ago and is a new man.

My weight has always been 9 stone since I was a teenager, my husband is around 12 stone. Quite normal.

Without it your body will slowly start showing you all sorts of symptoms. if caught early you should feel fine and dandy. Low thyroxine levels can in some cases lead to heart and brain problems. Think of it as replacing a nutrient that you are lacking. It is totally safe and life saving.

There also is the advantage of being able to get free prescriptions for life! Not many perks left in our NHS these days.

Seriously though, think about it and give ity a go for a few months. You may be surprised how better you feel, even though you thought you felt ok originally.

    Best of luck.

With antibodies of 342, you have Hashimoto's - plenty of info if you search on this. You are extremely fortunate that you have a doctor who did the antibodies test - and who would give you thyroxine with a TSH of 7 - hold on to that doctor at all costs!!!!

Hashimoto's is the no. 1 cause of hypothyroidism in the western world. Don't ignore it - the antibodies are destroying your thryoid gland so don't let it happen even faste.

    Good luck

I started on Levothyroxine 50 mg as I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism about 2 months ago. The only symptoms I got was sometimes I was tired but I put that down to my job.

I have had various side effects and I contacted the pharmaceutical Company telling them of my side effects.

They were very interested and have asked for my doctors name and various other questions?.

I have sent them back an email and they have contacted me again, as they appear very interested in my side effects?.

So can I suggest to you all that if you are suffering bad side effects then contact by email the Pharmaceutical Company who will be in contact with you.

I had to take 2 months off work due to my job being strenuous which I was quite annoyed about due to the

side effects, but I seem to be getting better days now as opposed to bad days so I just had to be patient and wait even though I'm still suffering with pains in my legs and ulcers in my mouth and feeling the cold for some

    Reason?.

So write to the Pharmaceutical company and maybe they can do something for us??.
