Ive been struggling with Insomnia for months now. What can i do?

I find it extremely difficult to fall asleep, even when i do i find it hard to stay asleep to the point where i only get a maximum of 2 hours. Ive come of my antidepressants because theyre making me worse but ive struggled with this for half a year. Ive tried relaxing techniques e.g. candles, reading, turning phone and tv off, hot milk, herbal sleep aids, stress relief tablets etc but nothing is working. Ive got a new job (that isnt stressing me out) but i have to call in sick a lot because im so drained that i can barely concentrate. I get bad headaches alongside it. Its gotten so bad i try to take strong painkillers to see if they knock me out sad ive been to the GP but they didnt do nothing but give me a weeks worth months back. Ive spoken to a NHS nurse and they told me to see my GP and explain again to them. My GP doesnt listen so i dont know what else i can do.. im so fed up.. its making me more depressed.

    Hi Shannon,

i have exactly the same problem, I sleep for 2 hours at a time if I'm lucky. What I find is that following a bad night... I have a better night the next. On that 'good' night I still wake up but manage to drift back off. It's awful, if I have something planned, I hope that the night before falls on a good night. It totally rules my life! I've tried all the sleep meds and nothing works, so now take nothing. Any advice anyone?

I don't really have advise except to try and get it sorted out.

Mine started the same way you and Shannon have described no one really helped much.

Sleep Meds no longer working and now awake all one night then still cannot get to sleep until the early hours sometimes later 8 am the next night I then sleep until late afternoon, sometimes later.

At it's worst can't sleep 2 nights and even so not until the early hours. Now that "good" night you talk about not really happening unless I'm awake 36+ hours.

It started like yours 11 years ago and I've only just got an appointment for a sleep study in October this year.

Things you could try are magnesium, 5htp, vitamin d valerian root.

Stop drinking caféine at lunchtime, give up smoking make sure your Bedroom is really dark, meditate. Chamomile tea really strong 2 bags.

I have tried all these things. Valerian root is closest feeling to temazepam but doesn't quite work. Keeping things as dark as possible, no TV phones or computer and two really string chamomile tea can make you feel surprisingly relaxed and sleepy.

If you are in the USA melatonin.

Good luck and hugs I know how you feel.

its horrid not sleeping. it makes you sick.... sleeping is the time your body heals and rests. have you ever been to a endocrinologist ? maybe your hormones are all out of whack and you need some specialist testing..worth a shot.. i was like this no sleep 2 years at least.. after heaps blood and urine tests found i gad many many imbalances. still working on them to get better but sleep has improved....

      Hi Theg,

I honestly don't know why I've not been sent to an endocrinologist, I've had problems for over 10 years. I was put on HRT and the first 8 nights on estrogen sleep was perfect sleep by midnight and awake with a start ready to enjoy the day.

Since for me I have had trouble getting to sleep every single night apart from those 8 nights for so long it would make sense that my problems are hormone related.

Do you think I can get a doctor to think the same way? I'm thinking when I go for my sleep study (eventually ) and tell them that they are going to say see an endocrinologist first! Fingers crossed something will be done.
