jaw pain and ear pain - any solutions?

Posted , 15 users are following.

I've been suffering from sjogren's for 6 years now (firmly diagnosed). My symptoms have progressed over the years, from just fatigue and dry, to dizziness, occasional swollen on ankle or back of hands, now to frequent (almost constant) jaw pain, sensitive hearing and stiff neck and constant ringing in ears. The pain is unbearable at times. MRI was done on my lower face and except for abnormality (scarred) glands, everything else was within normal range. I am not on any autoimmune medications as my rheumatologist thought my case was still mild, and I'm allergic to plaqunil.

Now I have to frequently take ibuprofen, which upsets my stomach. I am having trouble sleep at night because of night sweats and anxiety. I wonder weather anybody else suffered from ear and jaw related issues and have some holistic solutions for that.

No holistic help here but I wanted to make sure that you've eating some good when you take ibuoropfen. Can you take tylenol/paracetamol?

Thank you, aitarg35939. Tylenol can only provide temporary relief.

I can't really address all the other things you're experiencing but if your jaws and ears are hurting it could very well be TMJ. I don't know that it would show up on an MRI. I really don't know I don't even want to guess. In any event it would be worthwhile seeing a dentist that specializes in TMJ. They can make you a mouth piece that you wear at night that will help keep you from grinding your teeth which is a cause of TMJ.

Thank you, amkoffee! My ENT doctor suggested TMJ as well, but my question is whether TMJ may cause hearing sensitivity, ringing in the ear and ear pain? What do you think?  I'm concerned that there might be other underlining problems. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Hiya travelzhu1, I’ve had Sorgrens for 30 years and I still get swollen around one side of my face..like now..it can last from week to months, I have just got over a 14 year bout if 24/7 dizziness the neurosurgeon said it will go as quickly as it came, well it took 14 years, it was totally horrid, thought I had it for life, and of course I thought it was something more sinister. Apparently some of the fluid in my ear had crystallised making me dizzy and of course off balance..I had to use a stick for years. I have off course and still do get other symptoms but we are all different and my symptoms may not be had by others and visa versa..There was nothing medically I could take for it either, I have a few aotoimmune conditions also most of us do. The dr warned me nit to take any  ibuprofen they are really bad fir the heart and stroke etc,. I did change my diet and take lots of supplements - double the recommended dose,,I do hope you find something that works fir you, I’m really feeling fir you travelzhu1, have a blessed day...😍💐🙏🙏

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me, Christine! For 30 years! You must be a very strong woman! God bless you! It's a very difficult disease to live with for sure!

Christine. I must have missed this post of yours 24 days ago. I have had dizziness and off balance for 20 years. You said you had this for 14 years. How did they find out that fluid in your inner ear had crystallized?  What kind of a doctor discovered it. Today I broke down and bought a walking stick.  Haven’t taken it out of the sack, just got home and read this. I hope you will respond to me. Thanks 😊

Poor you Beverly...really feeling for you..a neurosurgeon ended up doing doing tests and they were all ok, he said it was from the sjogren Syndrome and that it would go as quickly as it came..well it was a rotten 14 years, I pnow I have to have both knees replaced it’s bone on bone through arthritis, well you can imagine grrrr..I just wondered how I would cope..anyway being a Christian I had prayer many times but nothing seemed to be happening..one Sunday in church, our Pastor said hands up if you have a prolonged illness then he asked: anyone who was near nearby to lay hands on us and pray...well some prayed for me and I was healed...I didn’t know it till I got up in the night fir the toilet..I couldn’t believe it...I woke my husband up and said to him: I think I’m healed..he said, you  would know if you were..I couldn’t tell at first because of being sooo limited with my knees....I always thin of that verse in the bible where God says...You will not have so much that you can’t handle. But through it I will always find a way of escape...it’s in Corinthians somewhere...wow..that was me..so I just have to wait a few more weaks to have my first TKR then next year my other one....please don’t worry about using a walking stick..I’ve had loads over the years, even bought some that matched my clothes..lol.., I have a walker too and whenever we went anywhere where there was lots of walking I sat in a wheelchair..these things are made to make things easy for us when we are in need..I fully recommend them...hope this helps..be blessed and have a lovely day😍😍😍🙏

Thanks travelzhu1, I don’t think I’m strong, but these issues certainly make us..I take Amithrutylibe-Endep it’s calked in Australia, fir Fibromyalgia it’s and old antidepressant and they discovered it cuts the pain off at the ends of you nerves stopping it from travelling to other nerves and throughout you body..,I do take a low dose have done fir 20 years now.,i tame it at night it gives me a great night sleep..pain free..the antidepressant side of it is a bonus. but apparently it can be a tad addictive, however zi have never had mine increased so they are working fir me really well..be blessed.🙏🙏💐😍

I do have Fibromyalgia as well. I'm currently not taking any medicines and am trying to find a more holistic way to solve my issues. Great that the antidepressant has been helping you! Do you also take any other meds, such as planquenil? Thank you again for sharing!

No I don’t, but I don’t take the Amithriptilyne-(spelling) for pain at night, it’s a pain blocker, it numbs the pain at the ends of the nerves preventing it from traveling throughout the body;  the antidepressant is jus a bonus I guess I only take a low dose the same dose for many many years, I take over the counter osteopanadol, Other countries call it something else.. and I take lots of supplements together they help soo much..be blesse, have a great weekend..💐💐😍

Not sure what  planqunil is..I do take over the counter osteo paradol, fir the arthritis some places know as paracetamol..very safe..and it doesn’t build up In your  system, that’s really all I take...I hate taking prescription meds too..it’s mostly just the two and lots of supplements..vitaminD, turmeric, glucosamine, especially magnesium, double dose of all, it’s mainly fir the Fibromyalgia I have over the counter eye drops for dry eyes and artificial saliva-over for mouth, the counter too..hope it all helps somewhat..💐💐😍

Thank you, Christine! I figured out that the ear problem is probably associated with dryness in the eustachian tube. I tried Ary aloe vera nasal spray and it has been helping! My pain has reduced! I will see a specialist for the TMJ and see whether that contributes to the whole issue. God bless you!

    Hello travelzhu

I have Sjogren's but suffer also from a Eustachian tube disorder called PET. Because of the latter I am on the Ear Problems and Eustachian Tube disorders forums on Patient.  Your symptoms sound identical to some I have seen reported in these forums so I am hoping you may be able to access them and read some of these posts.  TMJ, as a possible cause, appears regularly but there is at least one person who has benefitted very much from chiropractic work on her neck and also massage around her neck and face, tightness I think being the issue.  These symptoms of yours may not be related to the Sjogren's.  Keep researching and do not lose heart.  Best wishes.
