Joint and muscle pain

Have been on Simvastatin 40mg for 6 months following diagnosed of mild angina. The last 2 months have been hellish and alarming. Pains in both knees, under right foot, on top of left foot. When I kneel it's like kneeling in a patch of stinging nettles, pains in fingers and elbows. Within weeks I seem to have gone from a (relatively) fit positive cheerful man to a wreck. Doctor thinks it's arthritis but it has come on so suddenly. I believe its the Simvastatin and have stopped taking them .Due to see GP..

    Hi Robiinson,

Welcome to the world that is Simvastatin!!! My husband takes it and has experienced all that you have and still the dr thinks it's something else, I'm fed up of going with him to try and get the gp to change them to something else - hope you have a better GP than we do.

    Good luck

I had been on Simavastatin for probably over a year...our practice just gives them out to everyone over 60.....and this site alerted me to the side effects as I thought it was just old age and creaky joints but I decided to take myself off the medication in order to see if my foot, knee and joint pains eased....and I can say that they have eased a little but I'm sure I'm not long enough off them. As Jane1962 was and I still am, on Orlistat which means that my intake of fat is down to around 30 grams per day I hope and trust that I am not adding to my cholestrol problems at all but time will tell, won't it? When I think of the amount of fat I was eating before April, and I thought I was being good before then, I cringe at how I was clogging up my arteries....Orlistat has taught me the fat content of a lot of foods. In time I will report on my 'off Simavastatin' result.

I had been on simvastatin for at least 5 years and shortly after I started suffering pains in all the joints of both hands. I was seen by many people and invstigated by profesionals organized by the company I worked for as it became very difficult to concentrate on anything with such pain but nobody could find anything wrong.

One day I happened to glance at the blurb that comes with the tablets and noticed that one of the possible side effects was possible joint pain.

I told my doctor I would like to try a period without taking the tablets.

After two weeks the pain was greatly reduced and after 1 month I am now entirly free of pain. I am now on Fenofibrates and have not had a problem since.

Firstly, thank you to all of yu who have taken the time to share your experiences of taking this medication.

I took simvastatin for about 3 months and very suddenly began to expereince alarming pains in several joints in my body.

The worst were my feet, on the underside and my hands; in every little joint in both hands but, particuallry the right hand, which was extremely painful.

Also, my shoulder , knees, elbows and back have been affected.

I have stopped taking the tablets and the symptoms have improved slightly but I ssem to be on some sort of spiral. It has changed my life over night. I was 51 when this started but I move like I'm 82, my family are shocked at the sight of me, because I was very active before.

The doctors don't seem to know why it has occurred and the suddeness seems to perplex them.

I have now been referred to a Rhumatologist and await what will happen to me, will write again when seen.
